Default Anyone done their own auto trans rebuild?

I was thinking that I might try my own tranny rebuild, but I have concerns with specialty tools and the sheer number of small pieces that I think are inside the trans. I have seen a 6-speed apart before and it didn't look too bad, but I would be nervous about taking the auto apart. Anyone ever done one before? How bad was it?

James B has done this...I'm sure he'll chime in on how much, er, umm, "fun" it can be.

You are considering the same routes I have. This would come in handy for a rebuild.

I used a helm manual. It is what the dealer uses.

Get several manuals. The ATSG leaves much to be desired. I've never done a 60E, but I did the TH350 in my car and it wasn't too bad compared to engine rebuilds. Even though I'm going with a T56, I'll still probably build my 60E and sell it. Or maybe put it in my car. Who knows. Anyway, if you do your homework you can accomplish anything. You're a pretty capable individual. From what I can see, some of the "specialty" tools for the 60E can be made ore worked around.

If it turns out to be the tranny I think I'm gonna attempt the rebuild myself. I'd like to replace the 60E parts with 65E parts, I dunno if it would be better to start with a 65E or just work on the one I've got. I found someone on here who has a 65 with like 3000 miles for $1200 that might be a good base. I just gotta figure out what the best way would be to go. If I could do the T56 for not a ton of $$ I would love to do that, otherwise it's gonne be the 60 or 65.
