I've redone my rearend 4 times already but i'm still getting a whine in my 8.6 rear end i went from 3.42 to 3.90. Can anyone tell me howmuch shim i should go with. I think everyway i go will make it whine but.

My Richmond 3.90's howled like a wolf at about 55-65 MPH. Just get used to it. The Richmonds are prone to whining a bit. I know others have said their Richmonds didn't, but most do.

I've heard other 3.90's whine like a sob before with a perfect pattern. I also heard that any ratio other than factory ratios (3.73, 4.10, 4.56, etc) have a high potential to howl. No idea why that is, but from what I have seen, it may be true.

How much backlash? Is it possible to have the pattern correct but still too much backlash? I was pricing those same gears today with the intention of putting them in my daily driver. Now I may rethink and go with the Yukon gears.

How about the Yukon gears. Any reports of whine with them? They are real close in price.

I know mine was done by a shop, so i couldn't say what the backlash was set at, but it was a good shop that I trust. They even want back into it after the initial test drive just to check that everything was set right because the whine.
