Here is a picture of my connector. You can see the the locking tabs aren't grabbing the outer rim of the tranny. You can push it back into the case. The green insert you see was also missing. I put one in that I had laying around.

I think the O'ring might be stopping it...it's a very tight fit.
It needs to push all the way through and lock in...obviously.
EDIT: I think it can only go in in one orientation also...so maybe try turning it.

Got the engine on a stand today and pulled the pan. The connector just took a knock somewhere. Little coaxing and it snapped right back in.

Like what I see so far. Basically a brand damn new tranny.

I asked around because I was thinking the same thing when I did mine. I'd never opened an auto trany before so was 'scared' Lol!
Everyone suggested....I might as well go the whole hog and do the springs etc.
Glad I did.
I did it all with no special tools.
All's needed is rattle can lids and hose clamps (seal resizers), clear plastic sheet (lip seal inserting tool)...etc.

I have a feeling this is gonna be a slow going modification.
