Default 8 lug to 6 lug

Been searching without much luck. Can I take an 8 lug semi float rear out of an hd truck and swap in aftermarket 6 lug axles? Found a couple good deals on 8 lug semi float nbs rears but need 6 lug for my truck.

Yes, It's been done before.

You don't even need special axles.

The Brakes will be an issue though...

Yeah I'm not worried about the brakes. I read up on that part. Just couldn't find anyone that swapped axles. Was looking at aftermarket ones from summit. For the couple hundred bucks they cost I can be into a semi float 14 bolt that bolts right in for half of an ss or max 14 bolt

Wasnt sure if the correct length was offered. Any idea off the top of your head what the axle length in an hd rear is?

Absolutely! I just ordered some from summit.

Stock replacement and slightly better just below.

I went with the slightly better for $13 more an axle.

There is a slight difference between 8 lug and 6 lug axles but those are the axles that will slide right in. The application is for a 4x4 88-98 6 lug 14 bolt 9.5 semi floater used in heavy 1/2 ton or light 3/4 ton with 6 lugs. 2wd axles are shorter and will not work.

I used a light duty 2500 14 bolt 9.5 Semi float axle from a GMT 800 Silverado in Evil GMC's axle build. The also came in 1500HD model trucks.

So is the part number you gave for the 88-98 rear?
I'm looking to convert a 2001 8 lug semi float rear to 6 lug
Or am I confusing myself here lol?

Yes, those axles are the only ones that will swap into that specific 8 lug rear end to convert it to 6 lug. We used them in Evil GMC's build. Same rear end using 6 lugs axles and custom made flanges to retain the factory 1500 brakes. There is a slight difference in length between the 6 and 8 lug axles. I believe it was 1/16-1/8 per side.

I only found 1 company that would make custom axles for that rear end and they want around $800-$1000.
