Default 700r4 for Typhoon

Does anyone know if FLT builds 700R4 s. A Buddy called tonight that has a Typhoon and said his tranny crapped out. The trucks been sitting for about 4 years and he just pulled it out today, went around the block and heard a clunk and only has reverse now. If anyone knows a good place for a 700r4tranny let me know.

Prime Gears is a site sponsor at syty.net. Talk to George Blake, he's built tons of trannys and TC's for syty's. I'm sure FLT could do it, but syty trannys need to be built a little bit differently than others.

A lot of the guys have been replacing it with the 4L60 or 80 E. Give you a lower 1st gear and the OD is what i think they said.

The first gear in the 80e isn't as good and it is very expensive to swap a SyTy from the 700 to the 80e. If it is a mostly stock truck I would build the 700 and leave it in there.

I believe someone called us on this one. Not a problem.

The internals of the trans are the same as a 4l60e so I think we have that down to a science. The only difference in the syti and a normal 700r4 would be the valve body and the governor. If we are supplied with the correct core, I do not feel that we can not build it. As for GB he is the trans guy on that forum. That's cool. I did an 80 for a guy here in Chicago that bought a kit from George for the conversion. I had an issue with the output shaft that was supplied and had to get a different one. George was pretty good about getting me another to finish the build. Vince

Yeah if its a mostly stock truck the 80E won't be needed. An 80E swap can run upwards of 5grand.

Vince, AFAIK George is the only one that offers an output shaft the 80E that meets to the syty TC. So he kind of has a monopoly there. And as far as issues with other builders, it comes from how they setup 4th gear. Most trucks/cars don't shift into OD at wot, but a decently modded syty will on every 1/4mi pass. Due to the gearing and short *** tire, they get into 4th pretty quickily. Just make sure you build the vb and clutches accordingly. George has some threads over there on the details of this if you're interested. A lot of guys on syty.net have had trannys built by other builders that can build stout 700R4's all day, but they suffered 4th gear issues rather quickily.

They do have a weird governor. Syclones and Typhoons did not have the benefit of "torque management" to save the transmissions, so one of the things they did was short-shift the 1-2. The 1-2 shift on a factory-calibrated 700R4 for a sy/ty is lower than the 4600 for the 2-3 and 3-4. Had they not lowered the shiftpoint the 1-2 band engagement would had to have been so firm to survivve the heat it would have jolted hard into second at every throttle position. It's a compromise. Yes - a stock Typhoon/Syclone governor calibration DOES allow a WOT 3-4 shift at between 96-98 mph. It's one of the few 700R4's calibrated this way that I know of.

I'm sure FLT can make that hold up to a pretty big power level. Internally it's just like the 65E's that they are building to handle big power. If he has any problems with the core issue I might be able to help. I have one out of a Typhoon that someone put a TH400 in. It's been sitting on my garage floor now for about 2 years.
