500+HP Tranny recommendations?
#1
I'll be installing a new 370cu and likely to get north of 500rwhp. I had decided to go with a Level 5 rebuilt 4l60e from Monster or FLT, but recently some people have been nsuggesting going straight to the 4l80e. Whats the concensus? Obviously, the cheapest avenue is what I'd like, but its more important that I do it right the first time. R/

I have a level 5 as well and I'd recommend the same thing as trevor as will any of the guys from FLT if they see this thread... they are confident in what they build because IMO, its the best out there but certain designs have inherent problems....
-save the headaches down the road an get a nicely built 80e for that kind of power.

i run an 80e from bowtie overdrives. As long as you follow their directions it has a one year unlimited mileage warranty and cost me $2300 shipped to my door with NO CORE CHARGE. Their website says its built to handle 500+hp and they are also a well established company.

im not to familiar with a 4l60e gauranteed to withstnad 750+whp.
Im with silver and others about if your more then 500 a 60e may or may not hold. Its hit and miss and for how long. But if you went ahead and got an 80e you wouldnt have to worry about anything. people are pushing 600 on a stock 80e with a shift kit.

In a heavy truck like a Avalanche go with a 4L80E,my Tahoe killed 6 different built 4L60Es before I went with a 4L80E.I highly recommend FLT.The combination of weight and high horsepower will break the hard parts in any 4L60E.

I did a lot of experimenting with Chuck on the 65E trying to get the hp rating up there. It can be done, but for a short period of time only (like a year or less) before some part goes. There's only so much you can do -- my last 65E died because the sprag flipped over -- nothing anyone can do to stop that... It was at 600hp, with a detune most of the time for daily driving.
Best bet -- if you want 500hp+, call Chuck or Vince at FLT and let them build you the right 80E for your goals. My 80E is in shipping and was built for 1000hp+ (same spec's Parish as Parish's build).
