Default 4l80E PROBLEMS. CONVERTER, CLUTCHES, LOCKUP? WHO KNOWS WHAT IT IS?

Just recently my truck does this wierd slipping jolting motion when you apply more than about a 1/4 throttle. It almost feels like it is in gear then it slips out of gear then back in. It is definately more noticeable in 1st gear from a dead stop. I haven't had the 80e in that long, maybe 500 miles on it. The truck feels way slower now. I don't know what the hell it is but it is frusterating as ****. Could it be the stock verter, clutches valve body going out? Also the trans has been leaking alot. I think it's coming from the front of the trans...could it be the pump? Yes I do check and fill the fluid regularly so I don't think the prob is from low fluid levels.
Anybody know?

Was this a freshly built unit you installed or is it a used unit?

There are two major causes of automatic transmission failures, leaks and high heat. If it has been slipping much at all then it is hurt to some extent.

Make sure that it is full then drive it with the intention of observing the symptoms. If it doesn't do it keep an eye on the level of the fluid and see if it acts up after a day or two then check the fluid again.

If it continues to act up then I would hazard a guess that the forward clutches are compromised. Either way, get that leak fixed and go from there. heck, it might just be worth your while to bite the bullet and have it rebuilt so that you can enjoy the truck again!

I would say that it's in need of being freshened up. I'm going to stick with my original comments... bottom line is it's wounded.

There could be line pressure issues due to a worn pump, a bad PR valve train... but I could go on. I hate to be the guy to say it, but it needs to come out buddy.

This happend to mine aswell, but mine started making a wineing noise, turned out to be the front bushing between the stater shaft and input shaft had slid out so the input shaft was free floating witch means the turbine in the converter was too.

That sucks man. I put this in with the intentions of it not crapping out on me as the 4l65 did. I thought these trans were sopposed to handle about 600ft/lbs with just a shift kit. Mine didn't last 500 miles. Too bad I couldn't do an allison conversion.

THis slippage feels way different than my 4l65 did. The 65 wouldn't shift at high rpms or quick acceleration at all. I would have to be very gentle in order to get into the next gear.

So what happened? did a new bushing fix the problem? well i hope this is the case if that bushing fixed the prob.

Well it also ended up putting a crack in the pump houseing so i have to get a new pump and have been to busy I havent even got around to ordering parts yet so its still apart. And I know how you feel, mine also went 500 miles when this happend, after 4 60es I was hopeing my trans problems were behind me but here it is all torn apart again.

I have the entire trans apart and this was the only problem I had found, if im not wrong the converter also has an oil pump in it so im thinking the shaft being loose caused the odd pressure problems I was having, but there are so many things that could go wrong in a trans its hard to say this could be your problem also??
