A vaccuum-modulated unit can be modified by restricting the feed hold in the separator plate. (Not easy) I've hit one with a MIG at very low power to accomplish this, but any spatter sticking to the plate in other areas can cause gasket blowout and trans failure. Plate warps easily too.
A higher-stalling torque converter softens shifts too.
James, didn't know a higher stall takes up some of the hit. Good stuff. I blew the **** out of a built 4L60E on my 89 when it shifted between gears. Apparently, took the rearend out too. Don't know which affected the other more, only know the end result.

No problem, lol. I guess I'm kinda confused on the difference between the 4L80E HD sprag and the TH400 HD sprag...I was under the impression that they were the same thing, but I guess they are not??

Damn, I saw your user title change and I was like WTF? Another tranny bites the dust. How many is that for you? You might hold the record around here for broken trannys. Kyle probably has the record for the most power/longest lasting stock 60E.

I couldn't tell you the diff between the 400 and 80E sprag. I replaced the one in my 400 due to the fact that I didn't know if it had an upgraded one or not, but it only cost like $50 or $60. I got it from Hughes here in town, so you might want to call the Hughes up there since they make them.

The hd sprag is the same one used in both units. However there is a super hold sprag drum set up that we use that was made for the 400 and can also be used in an 80e. This sprag is not a factory part for either of these units. Much wider piece and IIRC it has a few extra elements as well. Vince
