4l80 Assesment Thus far
#41
Switching from a stock reworked 2400 stall converter/built PB level 3 60 to the Circle D multi billet 3400/PB 80e netted me .2 in my 60 and over a full second in the 1/4. Every bit of the tranny in my opinion performs better than any 60e. Especially the part where I was replacing built 60's every two weeks and this 80 hasnt missed a beat. (knock on wood). Sil-mod-o's problems with the 80 have been because of reasons outside of the trannys fault. I did the swap myself in my driveway on my back. Its not hard if you can weld a little and isnt very expensive versus buying tranny fluid every month at $100 plus the time to be replacing trannys

my $.02..... if you have an issue with the 1st gear in the 4L80, you aren't making enough power. I finally got my tune sorted out today and even with a stock converter and the tall 1st of the 80, I've got zero traction under 20 mph. off idle it'll blow the tires of at half throttle and if I mash it, it's a smoke show through 2nd gear. Can't say that the low gear of a 60 would help me one bit. I'll be strapping on some drag radials this weekend to see what it'll do at the track and report back, but so far, the swap has been all I hoped it would be. The close ratio of the 1-2 shift is a world better than the huge rpm drop in the 60 IMO.
