Talking 3.73s or 4.10s rookie question, please come in and give me some truth.

Okay so I bought a new truck a couple of weeks ago and I am rounding out a few more appearance mods then I am going to jump right into the performance mods, but only after I have done a fair amount of research.

This question revolves around the gearing of my truck, from my sig you can see that I have the 5.3L V8 with the 6L80E 6 speed transmission and 3.42 gears setting on 20's.

From reading everything I have been able to find on this site and some others I see where these transmissions are geared pretty low towards the bottom end.

Daily driver of about 6 to 10 miles and taking it to the track twice a month for fun with friends, want a build a pretty mean street truck.

What I would like to know is what gearing should I go with for my truck...stick with the 3.42s or go to 3.73s or even 4.10s?

I am going to be doing full bolt ons, cam, stall, etc that you see in my sig, but still researching those as well.

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

I would go with 4.10's. It made a world of difference for me going to 4.10 from 3.42

4.10

The difference between 4.10 and 3.73 isnt much, so may as well go big or dont bother.

Heys guys thanks for the information, I have been leaning towards the 4.10s also, but with the with the new 6 speed transmissions being geared the way they are I wasn't sure if it would work well together, mostly in regards to first gear. Here is what I found from researching my truck with 3.42s as the rear axle and the 6 speed the gears are like follows.

1st - 4.027
2nd - 2.364
3rd - 1.532
4th - 1.152
5th -0.0852
6th - 0.667

Oh, I failed to notice you have the new trans. In that case, stick with the 3.42s. With anything higher the first gear will basically be useless.

It has the 275/55R20 factory Goodyears on it now so that calculates to an overall diameter of 31.90 in.

I wouldn't be opposed to going with a little wider and lower profile tire.

personally i think 410s with this trans on a DD is too much... a nice stall with the 342s should be plenty... if its still not to ur liking after your engine mods and a stall try 373s... but i can tell you my truck is no slouch off the line with the 342s and a stock stall...

yeah just use the money you were gonna spend on gears and just stall it. you can always do gears later if its not enough for you. now with 3.23 and a 4l60 i need gears for sure lol
