Default Is 2001 and oddball year for 4L60 trans?

My friend just bought a 01 ext. cab 2WD truck with a 4.8L. He was told that there is a pin in the trans that has come loose and not to drive it cause if the pin lets go there is a good chance it will destroy the trans to the point of not being able to repair. So he phoned some scrapyards to see if he could get one and he has been told they are different for some reason. Would you guys know the difference by chance? I would think as long as it is 2WD and say 1999 and up they would all be the same.

I cant think of why there would be a difference other then 2wd or 4wd like you said. I think they are even the same from '96+?

Exactly what i was thinking. I cant seem to be able to think of what pin is the problem they are telling him about. I have been in those transmissions my fair share for sure. So, i dont know what these guys are talking about.

Mechanical speaking they are the same with minor changes internally.

How ever the bell housing, input shaft and converter could be different if it was attached to a different Engine such as a the older 5.7L or a 4.3L

Even though they introduced the NBS trucks in 1999 they continued the the OBS trucks into 2000 with the older engines. To keep it simple from a parts stand point, They will Just say the 2001 up will retro fit.

As long as its 99- up from the same body style and engine platform you should be ok.

Obviously 2wd and 4wd will have different output shafts so you should stick to the same there.

the 4L60E, 4L65E and 4L70E should all retro fit back in the 99-up bodystyle

But if you truck was equipped with the 4L70E in the later years starting in 2006 you can not swap the other 2 in because the 4L70E has an input shaft sensor and the computer needs to see that signal.

The RPO codes for the 4 speed transmissions are:

M30 = 4L60E
M32 = 4L65E
M70 = 4L70E
MT1 = 4L80E

Info - New Product Announcement - 4L70-E (M70) Automatic Transmission #05-07-30-026 - (Oct 7, 2005)

2006 Chevrolet Silverado, TrailBlazer SS

2006 GMC Sierra

with 4L70-E Automatic Transmission (RPO M70)

General Motors Powertrain required a version of a current production rear wheel drive transmission capable of handling higher torque and horsepower without going to a larger size transmission. As a result, the 4L70-E was created. Very much like the 4L65-E, the 4L70-E shares many of the same components and adding premium materials and additional manufacturing processes, the 4L70-E is capable of handling up to 400 horsepower and 430 foot-pounds of torque. It is also capable of increasing shift speeds up to 6000 rpm.

The 4L70-E will be first introduced in some 2006 mid-size sport utilities and full-size pickups. The 4L70-E will be identified as RPO M70. The M70 will use the large 300 mm (101K or 112K) torque converter. Some M70 models will be the first 4L60 series transmissions to receive the new input speed sensor (ISS) .

Below are the 2006 4L70-E applications and models:

• Sport Utility 4L70-E models with ISS: SKD/TKD

• Full-Size Pickup 4L70-E models: CMD, CWD & KMD

Important: The following graphic and table describe only the essential components that make up the M70 transmission model and will not identify all parts.

The following identifies the 4L70-E (M70) components and the components it shares with the 4L65-E (M32) transmission.
