Default 14 bolt strength... bearing failure (pics inside)

well our van (2010 3500)at work broke an axle, it looks likes bearing failure to me, Iam throwing around the idea of putting it in my truck

so my question for you guys is how good is the factory locker?

if I did the swap, only thing I would do is swap axles to 6 lug

or I will just keep the 10bolt and upgrade to a true trac

truck will be under 600rwhp

Holy over weighted and no fluid I'm making 712rwhp through my 14 bolt on the stock 3.42 and G80 locker. I need to swap gears so I'll probably go with whatever Ron's recommends for a locker. But my G80 14 bolt unit is actually a burnout champ on the street. It sounds like a hand grenade going off when it unlocks in the burnout area at the track though.

178k miles on the van, probably 10,000lbs+ loaded in it when this happened

is this rear good with new axles? worth the swap?

Check the leaf spring pad width. I believe the van units sit off to 1 side of the van. requiring 2 different axle lengths. They are also wider than the standard truck housings.

I haven't messed with one that new though so I can't be 100% they haven't changed.

With a bearing failure like that though most likely that housing end is toast were the bearing sits.

It could be fixed and modified to fit your truck if you have the skill or know someone local that does.

A G80 in a 14bolt 9.5 will live if you take care of it.

I am going to go to an Eaton Posi when I do the gear swap on mine.
