I was curious which would be better from a strength and weight stand point to swap in a 1500? I have a 9" now that I picked up from the JY to use in my Camaro but got a Moser 12 bolt instead. I would like to narrow it about 3" per side versus the stock 10 bolt. I have read through the recent 14 bolt swap done and was curious of swapping a 9" would have any benefit over the 14 bolt and be about the same to swap out. Thanks.

 

What power are you running?

 

Um I would say 600ish. This is future planning for a truck I'm beginning on soon. I like the idea of being able to swap 3rd members, but I know the 14 bolt is a beast just very heavy. Although the extra weight in the back over the rear axles should help traction

 

Either one will handle 600hp all day....hell a 10-bolt will handle that...I've seen 10B's hold up to over 1000hp with a G80 in them...don't know how long it would last on the track though.

The 14B with 9.5" ring gear will be the easiest swap...and it comes with disc Brakes...if you get it from an SSS. I believe 05-07 SSS were the RWD ones.

 

Since I wanted to narrow it I'd rather swap housing I think

 

I would go 9'' but with only 600 hp i would just build the stock rear...

if you do a 9" you will need to do custom brakes since the gm truck brakes dont work due to offset. if you plan on going to a complete 5 lug setup though...not a bad choice.

the sss 9.5s were drum brakes. the awd 10 bolt trucks got rear disk.

the extra weight actually won't help too much with traction since it is unsprung weight.

for the 600hp range, i agree with above..a built 10 bolt be just fine.

 

How much does your truck make? Could you not cut the flange off the 10 bolt and weld it on the 9"?

 

i dont see why you couldnt. im sure moser or the likes could make you axles however you need since you will be narrowing anyway. a friend of mine used to do things like this all the time even using the stock axles and resplining them on his gear hob. cant remember off the top of my head if the tube od is the same on both
