i don't think it was too much low end torque. the 10.5 is damn strong even with a G80. a quick killer of any differential is wheel hop. wheel hop will take out just about any gear type diff (non spool). the stockers such as a g80 will just go quicker. with his caltrac's on there this may not have happened.

Can I do this myself? I really prefer to do all my own work
The locker comes already assembled. The case is 2 pieces, so all you have to do is seperate it, put the locker in it, the reassemble. There is a wing nut that holds the locker together, once the case is all assembled you just remove the wing nut an dthe carrier is all set. Then just install it with the ring gear, NEW bearings and ring gear bolts, and set your backlash.
Maybe not as easy as it sounds, but you should be able to handle it. You will need a dial indicator and magnetic base. Check your backlash before disassebly, and reset it the same.

the eaton is the most common because many feel the detroit locker to be excessive. to me it's just right.

as for your diff there grip, i'd see if the dealer will warrenty it for you. i know where i work it wouldn't be an issue. that's the same that comes in the 8.1 suv's and it should take the power. if you can get them to do it you can either sell the locker they replace it with or if you are really in good with them they will put an open diff back in it's place. either way i'd try warrenty first to try to knock down some of the cost.

I guess it could be a defect?
