Default $800 for gears

My dad is having 4.10's put in his 2wd 1500hd. THe factory is 3.73's and the shop he went to said $800. Does that sound right? In the CA bay area, anyone have any shops to suggest?

I'd save my $800 before swapping from a 3.73 to a 4.10. That's not that big of a jump for that kinda money. It seems high to me. I know around here they charge about $200 labor to swap a ring and pinion. How much can parts actually be??? $200 for gears and $100 for shims, fluid, gaskets, etc. still comes in way cheaper than $800. Where are you located?

I paid more than that for my swap, so you're in the ball park if it's a reputable shop.

Even though you aren't asking this question, since people are chiming in on the gear issue, I'll throw in my $.02.

I swapped out the 3.73's in my Avalanche for 4.10's and was very happy with the performance improvement.

For a gear swap only in Louisiana, Futral Motorsports would do it for $200 labor. Parts didn't cost me more than $100. I bought a GM POSI & gears, and had them install it for $400. If the $800 is for parts & labor, then I guess it's reasonable.
