Default need help with a old 85 f150 BUDGET BUILD

ok guys i know its a old truck and no where near what this site is meant for but all the other forums i try always had mustang guys, not truck guys, so anyways back to the story.

ok i have a 85 f150, it was my first truck that i got when i was 15, i've never really done anything at all to it, but its time for a change. it has a 300- in line 6, with a 3 speed with overdrive. has a 7.5" rear end. everything is all stock. , im wanting to rip all that out, this is a BUDGET BUID , (i know it costs a good bit of money but i always have 2 other trucks that i have tags and insurance and parts to buy for too) i want a quick turning motor cause im wanting a quick truck, im thinking low 13's or mid-high 12's. not wantin to run spray personally. i was thinking either a 351 cleveland, or maybe a 427 or 429. i know where a 460 is for $250 and i know where a 351 cleveland is for $300, but i figured the 460 wont turn up as quick.

i want thinking maybe a cam, headers, electric fans, 650 carb, any advice on wat cam and everything????

also would it be better to get a ford 8.8" rear end or truck and find a 9"?? also does anyone know what truck had 9" rear ends and what year?? i was thinking the 80 model f250's did but im not sure

also on the 427 what year mustangs came with these???

im open to ALL suggestions on set ups, i just want a quick reliable truck, its more less gona be a weekend only truck so even if i have to go all the way up to a 750 carb im fine with that.

cool idea, get pics if you get into the 13s/12s. I've never seen a ford in that body style run like that.

If you want reliability, why not start with a newer engine? I'd think a mustang(87+) EFI 5.0 would be a great starting point.

I'm actually wanting to do something similar to my 1995 F150 RCSB. It currently has the 300-I6 and a 5-speed, and I'm wanting to swap in an EFI 351w and a standard transmission (a T56 if it isn't too much of a hassle). Mine is already fuel injected, so I wouldn't have to jack with the wiring too much, so it should be pretty straight forward, other than the transmission.

Mine will be a daily driver, however, so I can't go quite as wild with the build as far as displacement goes... I plan on making it into a Gen1 Lightning clone, except without badges. Color matched front end, roll pan, lowered, some Gen2 Lightning wheels, and then just go h/c/i and some long tubes and true duals.

It'll probably be a while before I start mine, though.

FWIW, there are numerous Gen1 Lightnings turning single-digit ETs in the quarter. Different truck, I suppose, but basically the same body style.

IIRC, the mustang never came with a 427. there were 289,302,351,429.. never a 427.

myself, i would probably run the 460 if you can get a cheap one like you mentioned. a 351 windsor is a lot easier to come by than a cleveland, 300 would be a steal for a running cleveland.

the 460 would be a torque monster, with a little headwork, small cam, and a dual plane intake/750 carb setup.

the 8.8" rear will most likely be easier to find, cheaper, but i think that was a mustang/thunderbird rear, so may not be wide enough to fit the truck. do some calling to some junkyards for a 9" out of an older truck. lots of early 70's Ford trucks came with 9" rears, which should fit right in.

i would also run a slighty built c-6 tranny with a shift kit/small converter.

that combo could all be had in the realm of $3K ish.. and should put you low 13's all day, considering the traction issue with 500 ft.lbs of torque
