Turbo cam with good torque and fuel economy out of boost?
#1
I'm looking to turbo my 5.3L ECSB soon. The engine will have stock heads, intake, and CR. Turbo kit will be a front mount intercooled MP70 to start, probably going bigger in the future. Initial goal is 500 rwhp stepping up to 600+ rwhp.
The truck currently has an '00 LS1 cam which is 202/210 0.496"/0.496"116 LSA.
The truck must be able to pass smog with the cam (the turbo will be removed but the cam stays in) and sound close to stock. I am also looking for a cam with good low end torque for highway cruising at ~1750RPM to help improve the cruise fuel economy. I am perfectly happy sacrificing a few ponies if it means better fuel economy.
I've had my eye on the LS6 cam or a TU0 (216/216 .561/.561 114LSA).

Ls6 cam or an isky triple 12
The TU0 will have a pretty noticeable lope to it. Look into the isky 212, there are a few people running it with really good results. I'm running the isky 215 myself.

Ive been running the isky 215 .566 115 for about 4 years now in my Stock LQ4. Rantwo years with turbo and 2 years N/A. Love it. I tow alot and couldnt ask for anything better.
Ive been gettin 24mpg out of it in the past several trips out of town. And anywhere from 14-18 towing and DD'ing. And im bone stock with a paper air filter to a stock muffler but no cats, and a tune.
Stock48 has proven that the triple 12 capable of some serious power with his high 9 second passes in his daily driver.

216/216 561 561 on 114lsa that the right specs?
Usually if the numbers are close, i dont see how its goin to make a big difference..
Basically i dont think you would know the difference unless you put both them on the dyno for comparisons. and then the power difference would be so small id go with the better priced cam.

Here are some of the options that were listed.
LS6(01): 207/217 0.525"/0.525" 116 LSA
LS6(02+): 204/218 0.551"/0.547" 117 LSA
TU0: 216/216 0.561/0.561 114 LSA
Isky 215: 215/215 0.566''/0.566'' 114 LSA
Triple 12: 212/212 0.56x/0.56x 112 LSA, Idle clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VloOBPPdoxk
The triple 12 sounds a little too choppy at idle, that would raise eyebrows at the smog station. I think I'm limited to a minimum LSA of 114. I'm leaning towards the TU0 or Isky 215, they are basically the same.

Ill find a video of my 215.. if you know anything about hotrodding, you can pick out it has a cam.. but not choppy at all being a 114lsa
also you can idle it up and play with the timing and make the chop go away. we idled lglowe's at 900 with about 25* timing and it was smooth.. lowered it to 650ish at 22* and it chops
