Looking to probably get a new cam with my turbo build. I know you can’t get choppy choppy but I see a lot of dudes with turbos and you can tell that their truck is not stock just by the sound.
I was looking at the Texas Speed turbo cam stage 3 and although I am not 100% sure on turbo cams I didn’t think this one looked meant for turbo? If that makes sense.
I was planning on the trick stage 3 kit with just the cast 7875 turbo, didn’t think I really needed the billet.
Any other cams yall can recommend? I want something bigger than my current 212/218 I think but nothing massive. I will sort out the converter after I finish my engine as I believe in engine first tranny second.
Also can someone explain to me the downpipe? I know what it is but what piping do I use for it? Do I need to get one fabbed, I heard some people use the diesel exhaust but does that include the diesel downpipe and bolting it right up? Maybe I’m missing something
This is my tentative parts list, I know I need gauges so they are not on here yet. Was looking at maybe a bigger fuel pump as well. Hoping to get 600 to the wheels? Or is that too much to ask for?
This is mainly a general what parts for turbo thread. I’ve read just about every turbo thread on the forum but still have questions
The Trick stage 3 comes with a 3" downpipe, so use 3" exhaust. I welded a 3" V-band on the end of the downpipe to make the exhaust easy to remove. If you have welding skills, running 3" pipe all the way out the back is not very tough. Over the axle pipe uses all the bends except for two of the 45's. I made my exhaust for my crew cab and it took me a day and a half taking my time, first exhaust I ever built. Used 409 stainless mandrel pipe from Summit. Two 4' straight sections, I think six 45's and one 90 deg bend. Order one extra 45 and 90 bends in case you mess one up. Bending 1/2" stainless for the hangers was the biggest PITA. Just lots of measuring and fitting before you cut, so lots of crawling under, then getting up to cut. If you are having a shop do the exhaust, $125 seems way too low and your pipe cost seems low as well.
I set the plumbing at $130 because if I just bought the duramax exhaust I figure I could nab it for that price or a little under. The shop that welded my current exhaust charged me $100 along with extracting a broken bolt, uninstalled my old stuff reinstalled new + weld. At worst it is free and get my buddy to do it.
Ah so the kit comes with the downpipe I just need to weld exhaust pipe to that correct?
Edit: Also was just planning a rear axle dump not all the way out the back
Downpipe stops just under passengers side foot well. I would use a flange, clamp, or V-band to connect the downpipe to the exhaust, otherwise it will be a huge PITA to get the downpipe out of the way if you need to work in the engine bay around the passengers side head.
Yeah that makes sense. Then my $125 estimate to install the exhaust system is pretty damn close as that is pretty much everything they did for $100 lol
Although now I know the downpipe is 3” it should lower muffler cost slightly. Was looking at the Borla XR-1 3” in and out straight through. My current exhaust is pretty quiet, 3” pipe into super 40 Flowmaster two 2.5” pipe out
If you are dumping the exhaust before the axle, I don't see how the Duramax exhaust will help you much. Since mine is a 1500HD it has a 3/4"ish body lift, so fitting the pipes maybe easier. However, I used a straight pipe section from the downpipe to above the Torsion bar adjusters (with a high flow cat in the middle), then I cut down two 45's to make an S shape, then straight section to the muffler. Any exhaust guy worth anything should be able to make that in no time.
I started my truck up without the exhaust and couldn't believe how quite it was. I used two Magnaflow straight through mufflers (12289 and 12259) because one straight through Borla on my Camaro was too loud. I need to be able to drive away to work in the morning without waking up the family. It's a little too quite, but works great.
Was planning on cutting off the end and welding on a dump point for the duramax exhaust. It just was a little less time consuming since all the hangars are relatively in the right spot etc
What is the goal for the truck. If its mainly street driven I feel like the stage 3 is way too big. I would look at the summit high lift truck cam. Its 218/227-112. Have it in a customer truck (82 k25 with a 370 billet gen 1 vs racing 78/75) and it is a ripper has a nice chop even in a 370.
