Default STS oil feed check valve

What is the purpose of the check valve that STS puts on the oil feed line to the turbo? If you don't use it would it cause the turbo to push oil through the turbo seals?

It keeps the oil in the feed line from settling into the turbo housing when the engine is turned off. Without it the truck will smoke like crazy for a few minutes every time you start it up.

the oil will actually pool inside the turbo and then run out the exhaust

Yeah, that's what I figured. I forgot to put it on my new turbo and I think that is wat is causing my oiling problems.
