Default STS guys, wiring your meth kit to keep engine out of high boost............

Having almost completed my rear mount turbo install, I got to fitting the meth injection. My kit came with a tank but due to it's shape I couldn't use it so I made my own. I used a length of 6" PVC pipe along with 2 end caps. It was quick and easy and cost me maybe $20. There was plenty of room under the truck cab floor to mount - I made 2 brackets to bolt it to the chassis. It holds about 3.5 gallons, should last a while.

The downside was that I couldn't keep an eye on it to check how much was left in there. A quick search on eBay and I found a float switch which would work perfectly. I thought I would wire it up like in the pic, so when the level dropped low, it would complete the circuit and light a light or LED to let me know meth level is low.

My turbo has an electronic boost controller installed. This thing works when you flick a switch and put 12V to the solenoid (?)

So I had an idea.............................. Wouldn't it be good if when the meth level drops low, not only does the low meth light come on, but also high boost is disabled. No probs, easily done with a relay.

So I wired it all up and thought I would share it with you guys. To some of you this will be old news. But it may actually help some as well. So here goes.............

You need a DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) relay. You can get these almost anywhere.

The way they work is, basically, there are 2 switches inside, both seperate from each other, but both will switch when you put 12V to the relay coil.
These switches both have 3 pins. In the pic below, pins 5 & 6 are the "feeds", pins 1 & 2 are connected to the "feeds" and pins 3 & 4 are open circuit but as soon as you put 12v to the relay coil, pins 5 & 6 will switch over from 1 & 2 to 3 & 4. So now, pins 5 & 6 are no longer connected and 3 & 4 are. Sorry, does that make sence????

Let me put it another way. Get yourself a DPDT relay.

Step 1. Take the wire that goes to your boost controller, cut it and connect one end to pin 2 and the other end to pin 6. These pins are already connected inside the relay so even though you have cut your wire, you have in fact connected it back up through the relay.
Step 2. Take a wire from 12v (Ign is good) and connect it to one side of a globe. From the other side of the globe, run a wire to pin 3 on the realy. Now run another wire from pin 5 to the vehicle chassis or any good ground. Because these 2 pins are not normally connected inside the relay, the globe will not light up.
Step 3. Take one of the wires from the float sensor and connect it to the chassis or any good ground. Now take the other wire and connect it to pin 7 on the relay. Now connect pin 8 to 12v (again, Ign works well)

There, all finished. So what happens now? Well, when your meth level gets low, the float switch in the tank will close the circuit and activate the relay. Two things will now happen:

1. Your lamp will light up letting you know your meth is low - time to fill up.

2. The wire that goes to your boost controller will now go open circuit. That is, you now can't hit high boost.

Oh, BTW, the seller for the float switch on eBay is qwh9012. Shipping was a bit slow but it arrived OK.

Sorry for the long post - I hope some will find this usefull

WOW lots of good info, and nice work on the meth tank. I have a few questions. How does the meth tank vent? through the fill cap? and could you put any baffles in the tank? I know when my little alky tank is about 1/3 full the light flickers every time I stop.

For the vent, I drilled a small hole in the top and screwed in one of those adjustable micro-fittings from a sprinkler system. You just twist it to open it or close it. I'll get a pic tomorrow to show what I mean.............

I didn't put baffles in. I thought about it and decided if the meth does splash around I'll either try to put some baffles in or maybe find a foam that's compatible with meth and shove some in there.

The instructions from STS on the methanol injection includes a section to do just that.

"Systems with electronic high/low boost controllers(EBC) can be defaulted to low boost during methanol system failures by connecting a relay inline with the EBC control wire with control wire routed through the normally closed circuit of the relay. Supply voltage to the relay and trigger the relay with a ground wire routed through the pressure switch on the end of the methanol pump and then to ground. This switch will then ground the relay and open the circuit when there is ess than 40 psi of pump pressure."

They also suggest using the windshield washer reservoir if the supplied container is to big. If you are low an methanol your truck will have a wishdshield washer low light in your dash. Maybe you can splice into that wire so that if your meth container goes low you will get a warning. You can then check to see if it's the washer fluid or the meth that is low.
