STS- Dyno queen OR Track performer???
#51
Yeah! I have a wife, newborn, and I just bought a house. Time and money are hard to come by right now. Flyer did not get the 11.9 on the first time down the track. It takes time. Congradulations to Flyer by the way! I have nothing but respect for him and anyone who has a fast or slow truck.

The STS is a very nice kit. Saying that it is just a dyno queen is a pretty bold statement. I was dead set on a STS for my truck until I weight the pros and cons of the radix and I decided that it would cost at least the $1000 difference in price between the two to get the STS to the level of the Radix's out of the box.
The STS theoretically would be less efficient of course due to heat loss within the exhaust on its way back to the turbine. Although, there is some gains in cooling of the compressed air on its way back to the intake.
As far as is it the best form of turbocharging for maximum efficiency and performance, no. Is it a very simple kit that offers a lot of results for the work & money, yes.

i'm not saying that the kit is the reason for them being a dyno queen. they do consistantly put down way more power at the rear wheels than the number they frequently put up. i can count on one hand how many have run an impressive number. i can agree that not every truck is a track type truck, but it seems like almost every truck that gets the kit is track time defficient. it wouldn't bother me except that almost every one of them does nothing but talk about how hard their truck pulls and how impressed they are with their kit. one of my customers we put a procharger on had his truck at the track less than 24 hours after we got it up and running and we all know procharger kits suck. they make a great head unit, but not much for the kits. i also hear the i don't have enough time thing. once you've installed the kit, you should be ready to race it by the next day or within no more than a week if you're programming it yourself. you're not re-inventing the wheel, your turbocharging the truck. the other thing is, it's odd that almost every one of them makes the time and pays for a dyno session, but not going to the track. the dyno is 50 bucks minimum, scheduled, and is usually an hour or two of your time from driving in to leaving.

I'm dyno tuning the truck. That is the best way to do it. I am not tunning the truck my self, nor are alot of the sts owners. Alot, are running mail order tunes. I have had things wrong with my truck, I am not going to run my truck at the track if there is something wrong. I am not even going to give it full throtle. I am going to baby it untill it is right. I have the stock bottom end. It sounds like you are complaining about the fact that the sts customers are so satisfied with there kits. I think that is a good thing. Maybe you should sell there kit too. Flyer did not run the 11.9 in 24 hours of installing the kit ether.

I also know of someone that has a procharger set up. He has a camero, all raced out. It has 700rwhp, (dyno) and it runs an 11.6. He and alot of other people are not impressed with the time slip. But you dont hear him condiming the procharger kit, like you are doing with sts. No one is calling his car a dyno queen. And yes, it took awhile before he ran that time.

if he has 700rwhp and is only getting an 11.6, that's just plain embarrassing. that would be a good example of a dyno queen or show car. there's no reason at all a 700rwhp f-body goes 11.6.
as for flyer's number, my point with his wasn't how soon he got there, it was refferencing a how fast he went to compare to another truck's abilities.
if you're dyno tuning, i assume you're going wide open. if you're willing to go wide open on the dyno, why not at the track? was it worth buying a turbo kit that you can't go wide open with? i would have to assume that you baby it around town too then because a track and the street are about the same thing. if you can go wide open on the street, you can go wide open at the track. over 4 grand is alot of money to have into a mod that doesn't let you go wide open. yes, i did say over 4 grand. by the time you buy the kit, injectors, tuning, meth or intercooler, and any other parts needed you are well over 4 grand into an STS kit.

Yes the camero did run an 11.6 with 700hp, he had slicks and a 6 speed. I only refer to flyer's 11.9 because you respect his numbers and are forgeting the time it took for him to get there. My tuner was dataloging when it was on the dyno. I was not scard then. (Wide open throttle) If there is an issue in the maps he would see it. I did not know I had a hole in my intercooler when I first took the truck to my tuner, who tunes on the dyno. We found a leak on the dyno. I went home played with the piping and the intercooler. I found a hole in the intercooler. Took the truck back to him to have him double check my valve train because I didn't like the way the motor sounded at 6k rpm. He found that the push rods where the wrong size. Put it on the dyno to tune and my methenal would not spray. I didn't want him to change my maps and tune with out the meth. So I took the truck back home and got the meth to work. I made another apointment for the 4th to make sure everything is ok before the track. If I got 15psi and he only tuned for 11, then my timing would of be to high at 15psi. You are a tuner, (right) you should know very well that you don't go wide open throttle if something is wrong. Yes it is worth it because, I know when doing performance mods you run into issues like this. I am very happy with the numbers and the way the truck performs, even with a boost leak. ( at the time I didn't know I had a hole in the intercooler, I just thought it was a small leak) As I drive the truck to and from work I do baby it. I do not go wide open on the street.

correct, I will be going to the track ASAP. Tune will be done on the 4th. I put the cam in and didn't change or check the push rods. (Mybad) We are runing a 15lbs spring in the wastgate, cant turn it down. I had the gain too low on the meth and it would not spray. Alkycontrol, It was working when we tuned last time.

the seat of the pants dyno is what i use and and when i felt my truck pull hard when i mashed it it was like getting high! the rush was awesome to go from stock to feeling that new power made me happy i bought what i did. i dont need any bodys numbers or approval for my truck modifications, i wanted a power addder, looked at the options went, with sts dont regreat it. like i said before, if i was loaded i'd have 1 truck turbo, 1 truck supercharged and 1 truck all motor, i like all forms of performance. another thing is i like bieng able to take my kit off if i need to easily, it would be a pain to swap your supercharger manifold or front mount turbo if you were going to need service or selling your vehicle.
