small turbo cam for mid range-focused 4.8

Hey all
Am in early stages of building a turbo LY2 to be dropped in to my daily driven Hilux (Southern hemisphere version of Tacoma - ish). Currently has big cam, big plenum, big runner N/A LT1 and the powerband is all up top, so looking to replace with something with fat mid range and better (off-boost) fuel economy. Havent decided on turbos yet but am looking for driveability so will be on the small side, and looking for recommendations on a cam that will promote fast spool. In fact also wondering whether I even need a new cam as really dont want to lose much (any) from the low end since thats what annoys be about current setup, but consensus on here seems to be that anything is an improvement when it comes to the factory truck cams...
Based on what seems achievable with these motors 550RWHP would be nice, will be stock bottom end and only ARP head bolts and upgraded valve springs up top. Again not looking to rev the **** out out of it but would be nice if it doesnt fall flat too early. Thanks in advance!

I love my Isky Triple 12. I have a 5.3 not a 4.8 but I think it would probably do great in a 4.8. Low to mid range is night and day and still pulls awesome up top. I picked up 90hp under the curve and 50 up top on 2 psi less boost. I would pm stock48 he can get you set up. Great cam and great guy to deal with.

OK thanks, seems like a lot on here have a lot of good things to say about that cam. Are you saying the triple 12 does better than the stock cam down low also (ie off boost)? What is the fuel economy like when driven around underneath boost?

No aftermarket cam will do as good "off idle" as the stock. However the good news is with an decent torque converter your stall speed will blow right past "off idle" so performance there is really moot. The triple 12 will do fine as a mid range cam on a 4.8, as will anything in the 205-214 intake duration range. You might want to make sure compression is in the 9.5 to 10.0 range depending on the quality of fuel you have. That will make a big difference in the out of boost feel of it.

Thanks Atomic, with this build I'm kinda trying to have my cake and eat it too re power versus economy. I very nearly bought an L92 instead of the little V8 as the lack of torque when just punting around with current setup is super annoying, but other thing I don't like is it drinks fuel even when just tootling around. So decided to go turbo 4.8 versus NA 6.2, and size turbos so I can drive underneath them for grocery getting (ie ultimate fuel economy from baby V8), but have tyre frying mid range not far away if I step on it. The last turbo car I built was a similar setup so I think it is possible to achieve best of both worlds. Also why I don't wanna end up with a cam that's significantly thirstier than stock when just cruising off boost... In that context, how does the triple 12 suit?

As far as fuel economy goes I am still seeing around 20-22 mpg mixed driving and some beating on it. The car weights 3500 with me and full of fuel. I need to get the tune dialed in a little bit better and i think it would pick up more mpg. I havent really seen any loss over the stock lm7 cam in the economy or low end department.

could someone please give a comparason between the triple 12 and the ls6 cam ? I'm also planning a boosted 4.8 build and after seeing the numbers the truck that rob Melcher was sharing vids on YouTube ......wow that truck ran great ! I know they ran e85 so maybe not so good for pump gas ?

Rob is Foose08 on here.
Yea his 4.8 build was great, but keep in mind it blew up like the 3rd day he had it in the 900hp range.
Triple 12 will be more aggressive than the ls6 cam. Stock48 who posted above is the guy that makes/sells/designs the triple 12 cam so he could probably elaborate more
