We started with just replacing the wastegate spring with a new one. Then we ran a boost reference line from the manifold. After that we replaced the whole wastegate. It finally worked when we vented it to atmosphere. I think the exhaust pressure was holding it shut.

Not the new revised version. I just got mine about a month ago, and it vents separatley.

It gives pretty loud wooosh when under boost. But under normal driving conditions its not that loud. The lack of a muffler and cats and a tailpipe that exits under the bed is what makes it loud. You can still hear the turbo howling over it though.

That vent hole at the rear of the wastegate will not affect the sound at all. It is behind the diaphram of the wg and exhaust does not come out of it, unless the diaphram is torn or missing.

It should be open to atmoshphere for single boost and it should be referenced off of the boost controller for dual stage applications.

The turbo/wg assembly ships unassembled from STS. If the hoses were on wrong, somebody else did that. Or, I should say, that is the way it is on the Hemi kits.

The is most probably the bov, not the wg. If you are talking about when you lift from a boosted run, then its turbo surge. The compressed air in the pipe from the compressor to the throttle body will back up through the compressor causing turbo surge. These turbo's are designed to handle that.
