Technically a heat exchanger is a generic term for an intercooler, and technically, 99.9% of the "intercoolers" you see on cars are AFTERcoolers. The term intercooler came from WW2 era airplanes that used multiple superchargers. An intercooler fit between stages of compressors. Since most of us just use a cooler after the compressor, its technically an aftercooler but the intercooler name stuck.

one in your plenum is the actual intercooler, the one in the grill is the heat exchanger...alot of race setups dont even run the heat exchanger since it heats the air up when using Ice tank setups

the heat exchanger with coolant running thru it is a setup for a daily driver

well I don't have a racecar, it just looks like one lol. since it relates to IAT, how does the intercooler and heat exchanger work together? so the intercooler inside the charger has the liquid flowing through it?

Blower pushes air across the intercooler
Heat exchanger is a radiator where liquid goes from a tank down to a pump then heat exchanger then into the core of intercooler then back into tank...

So youre IATs will only be as cool as the liquid in your tank.

When using ice tank yiu can have IATs at 30* but youll go thru bags of ice a pass

so for a better operating system, I need a bigger heat exchanger...the intercooler can only as cool as the heat exchanger will allow? I don't think I will ever put ice into my tank. even though it's around 5 gallons.

Go drive it around let those IATs get into the 150* mark them open up the tank to see if it is really hot.

Ice is for race, our old setup on a whipple would go from frosty ice tank to IATs crossing traps at 190*

Was only a 2 gallon tank

But for yours a large tank and large heat exchanger will help but end of day its still a heat pump

Can swap out liquid for water wetter or purple ice
