Plenty of us have made the switch at some point to the 4l80e after blowing up multiple 60's. Check the GM drivetrain section out, lots of info in there on the swap. If it wasn't so late here I'd look some up for ya.

That GM controller is made by TCI. The one with the TCI sticker on it instead of the GM sticker is several HUNDRED dollars less!
I run the TCI controller in my truck with a 4L80-E. The controller only needs TPS and tachometer from the OEM harness to work. You can splice the rear VSS into the factory connector so your cluster and ABS will function.
This controller is much easier to program than the stock PCM. It can be changed in real time while the truck is being driven. Each gear has it's own table for line pressure on TPS vs. Duty Cycle, and gear shift points are plotted on a table with MPH vs. TPS. Changing things are as simple as dragging the points to where you want them - in real time. Also, it has paddle-shift capabilities. All you have to do is fabricate some up/down and toggle switches and it connects right up.
These controller perform flawlessly. I have had ZERO problems with mine since I installed it.
When I installed it there was no programmer available for the old body-style trucks. If I were to do this again I might try to use the factory PCM to do the job. It's just nowhere near as simple to change shiftpoints and parameters as these controller make it.
