YE$, they can. Hell I think a 4.8 can handle more boo$t. I'd look for a 6.0, and run up to 12 p$i ea$y. or build the 5.3, and run a whole lot more p$i. Hopfuly your oil probleme i$ $omething el$e all to gether. I now look at 5.3 pi$ton$ like I look at a 4l60e, $ure they work, for a VERY VERY $hort time..............
Do you have any idea how hard it is to use "$" insted of "S" and type fast? lol

So the Jury's decision is in.......
5.3l+4l60=
I smell something really stinky.
I think a few of those wintertime boost spikes I had when the wastegate froze may have helped the demise of the stout 5.3

How about a used LS1 or LS2?? How much for one of those and what about their pistons?? or not ???

I think the ls1's pistons are made out of a better alloy. The ls1 has a higher comp ratio so you would have to run less boost or higher octane fuel. Just remember to file the rings to a larger gap or you will bust out the ring lands or pop a chunk out of the top when the rings bind under boost.

Forgot about the higher compression ratio. Maybe I'll just stick to replaceing the 5.3's pistons and be done, that is if that's what's wrong with it.
What brand piston is out there to keep the 5.3l's ratio the same or slightly lower than stock?

Gotta bore the block to a 3.905 to get some forged pistons. Either way the block would have to be sent to the shop for honing so might as well get a little isplacement.

What is the stock bore's size? I'm only at 67k miles now.

Diamond could custom build you some pistons. I have a brand new 5.3 I dont want to bore out so I plan to contact Diamond this winter. I also plan to install some 4340 rods. If you have to bore you're block you could bore it out 3.905 and use off the shelf pistons and save about 200-300 bucks, but you may need to get a ls1 crank because balance is different because of the weight difference of the pistons. You would need a rebalance at least.

A swap to the 6.0l is sounding better every minute. More power, better to blow the tranny with.

No matter what pistons he goes with he will have to get the rotating assembly balanced. All the aftermarket forged pistons are light then the sotck cast pistons so material will need to be taken out of the countewieght. Off-the-shelf's will run about 550 with wrist pins and rings, my JEs which were custom were almost 800.
