Default First Dip Into Forced Induction.....

so ive read write-ups on understanding turbos and turbo kits and forced induction, and my eyes keep going blurry from what seems to be a never ending science.....so far im understanding....

- i need to run lower compression (been told 9.0 - 9.5:1 is good range??)
- larger turbos take longer to spool ie. great for the last 1.8th (smaller ones for quick boost)
- pick a turbo specific cam

and theres much much more but ill keep this short......

Im looking to build a twin turbo LQ9 for the track, but still be streetable. looking to blow the 6.0 out to 408cu. ive got the alum 317heads that came with the LQ9 but am wondering whether to get these worked, or to go with an aftermarket/other head (hear the L92 is a good one).

for turbo choice im not too sure, theres gotta be a happy medium between great off the line, and great in the back 1/8th so im open to suggestions. got some friends that do custom exhaust stuff so ill probably do the piping (hot/cold) on my own using stock manifolds and just buy an intercooler/bov's.

so here in lies my questions.....
who makes solid internals? whos running what/whos happy with what?
what turbo's? brand/size? new/used/reman?
heads? work the 317's? go for L92's? other suggestions?

and just anything else that im missing out on. i know there are a lot of very knowledgeable, experienced people in these forums so any advice/ideas would be very appreciated. (sorry for the long writeup)

Thankyou,

Kyle.

Looks like you have the money to burn and 800hp is def possible on a twinned 408. For the heads, you could have the 317 ported and polished or drop 2k on a set of cnc'd heads. For turbos, 2 GT67's should do the trick. What gears and trans are you running? How much money do you honestly wanna/have to spend?

You can do way better than 800rwhp with the approach your taking! Theree are a few vendors ------>> who have the necessary parts you seek

This is a slippery slope to tread on your first time out.
Things you need to do first...
-Build a Tranny
-Beef up your rear end
-Upgrade your fuel system
-Upgrade your cooling system

Those 4 things can run you upwards of $10,000 but a minumum of $4,000. What's your budget for the whole build and are you doing all of it yourself or contracting out certain aspects of the build?

im not one to half *** on a build (firm believer in you get what you pay for), but im not the richest guy in town either.... i know i can do the whole engine/turbo build (ive seen other tt-builds) for WELL under $15k if i take time parts gathering, and do as much of the work myself as possible. im not in a huge hurry on this one.

- once i know what the engine needs, the fuel system will be built to adapt. external electric pump, and a custom rear tank is all ive got decided so far.
- tranny is a 4l80e to be built up. (shift kit, auto/man valvebody, HD sprag, ext cooler)
- ill be using the largest 4-core rad i can fit into the truck, same for intercooler
- rear end will be a fab 9", nodular case, 4.11 gears and detroit locker, 33spline axles

things im also not 100% on are coverter speed and gear choice. the 4.11 is my rough guess im not sure on the math. i would also like to stick to a 10.5 tire.

thanks for the help guys,

Kyle.

Well, sounds like you've thought some of it out. I wouldn't go with 4.10's though. Get 3.73's or 3.43's. 4.10's are great for NA trucks but FI especially turbo's love the smaller stuff.

Why do you want such a narrow tire? You will never get traction with a 10.5" tire.
