Default Exhaust + STS

Just a tad bit of background on the truck before I ask the questions that I have..

01 5.3
STS gt-67
Nelson SD tune
Stage 1 meth kit
FMIC
5lbs..(8lbs in a few days)
stock internals
FLT 65e
3.42 gears
eaton posi

Exhaust consists of:
Pacesetter longtubes
ORY 3"

- turbo is mounted about a foot and a half right past the cab. The pipe looks like it goes from 3" down to 2.5".
- exhaust exit on the turbo is just a foot long down pipe.

Question is:
How much is this exhaust setup hurting/helping to build boost. I tried searching for longtubes and STS but I couldnt really come up with anything. How much faster would it build boost with stock manifolds and a y pipe? I dont plan on putting a muffler on it to quiet it down or anything of the sort because I love the sound.. Any input on this would be great.

thanks,
david

Go to stock manifolds and an ORY and wrap the exhaust will make a big difference from what everyone has posted.

it would spool better and load up faster with the exhaust wrapped.... Stock manifolds are better than long tubes in this case. IMO... heavier material = more heat retention.

I have yet to look at a stock y pipe off of a truck. But would I need to get one made to go all the way down to the turbo? How big in diameter should the y pipe be?

the STS was meant to bolt on to a completely stock truck... manifolds, a stock Y pipe and intermediate pipe would be all you'd need I believe... no need to change size with that turbo and cubic inches IMO...

David if you want to swing by my place you can see my stock y pipe. I would just order a jegs ORY and take it to an exhaust shop and get them to mate it to the STS kit. I just so happen to have the header wrap and spray you need to wrap your exhaust. I bought it to do my STS when I had it and forgot about it sitting int he corner of the garage until right now.

Don't use an aftermarket y-pipe. Been there done that. The metal they use is thin and they do not seal worth a damn. Get a stock y-pipe and gut the cats. It will seal and the metal is much thicker so it will retain the heat better.

Wrapping the pipes gets the whole system up to operating temps quicker and keeps them there when not in the boost or idling for a long time. it does help, noticeably. I had it with and without and know first hand.
