Eaton.. Ported vs. Non ***SPLIT FROM OTHER THREAD***

Allright, I'm really curious about how this turns out Brian. There's been several threads pop up TODAY about this on other boards, people not seeing the advertised results. I'm staying neutral in this, but I just wanted to say how curious you've made me with this little tidbit of info.

Well, if it proves that power is made then I will be eating a little crow.....however if it proves other wise, I have a feeling there is going to be an influx of ported blowers on ebay.

Hey guys, I just pulled this from a thread over on NLOC. Seems that your test subject is not the only one having problems with the stage four port.

POST-port made 401 and 468.
My torque disappeared right before redline and my MAF I was told was at 4.9.
Seems like time for mafia to me?! I can vouch for Grimaces nitrous effectiveness I'll tell ya that much. Makes me want nitrous. still too scared...
(devil on one shoulder with bottle saying do it, do it...Angel on other shoulder saying don't do it, wife won't understand why 04 motor blew)...
There are 2 others posting as well. I love being right.

Bird,
I think I just figured out why you are backing the ports so much. I just copied this from svt performance.
"Me too - I gained substancially with a ported blower. I've got a new Stage-4 coming my way right now that I'm going to put on and get fully tuned to see what happens. Installed a ported blower on another friend's truck a couple of weeks ago and now he can't keep the tires planted.

Trust me when I say if you don't believe BC and I now, you will as soon as that stage 4 is on. Call it a friggen hunch.......

And, just to add a tidbit of info about the particular truck that you just posted about, the conditions were not EXACTLY the same. The ambient was about 40 degrees cooler for this session that it was on the last, so the truck should've made even more power than it did (and probably would've if it had been baselined as it sat from the previous tune). I'm not gonna say the port was the cause of that. Who knows what it was.

Well Cree, that just proves my point even further. You're right, the truck should have made even more power due to weather. I am not making any personal attacks here, I do just love being right. I have been a victim of the "snake oil" port as well. More than you know in fact. I have no beef with Bird, but I definately urge him to cancel any order he may have made for a stage 4 port. If he really is making more power on his current stage I am 90% sure he will lose most on his stage 4. The new stage is not even listed on stiegs website and as far as I can see has not had any good posts about it at all. Looks as though it was not tested enough, if it was even tested at all. A fatal mistake for a small business if you ask me. I foresee Stieg testing his refund skills to many an unhappy customer. I know of one already.
I do agree with BC on this. I can almost assure everyone that there will be an influx of used ported blowers though. I suspect people will be made wise of his ports very soon.....

FWIW - one of the locals down here recently put on a Stieg ported blower with ported upper, etc and on a stock block, 4# pulley and headers/catback - made 456/532 at the wheels - tuned by RWTD - with a decent bite, he's running 12.3's. There's power to be had - just have to figure it out.
I also just intalled a ported blower on another friend's Lightning a couple of weeks ago and now, after a good tune, he can't get traction at all (so much for the lost bottom end power theory).
Let's review now - here's 3 examples right down here of porting working well for the users......................there's answers in there somewhere.

ps. The issue of this thread is ported vs non-ported blowers - not Stieg ported vs non-ported. If there's a problem with the latest Stieg port, it still doesn't invalidate porting for more power - there's too many out there that have definitely made more power. Looks like this thread is mainly being used for vendor bashing instead of honest evaluation of the topic.

I just want to back up a minute here. This has nothing to do with one Vendor or another, it just happens that the blower in question was worked on by Steig......I guess this is unfortunate for him. As I stated in the above post, we will test as many trucks as possible to prove or dis-prove the original findings. Steig states that a retune is not needed for the ported blower on his website; these trucks will be tested with the calibration they come in with, 3 pulls with the ported blower and 3 with a brand new EATON supercharger. The AFR, Boost, and Load will be documented and logged on each run.

BC, I think you really need to make sure that the IATs, spark and fueling are the same for each blower test. I have been involved with alot of comparison testing and each of these factors can play a large roll in how the vehicle performs. I would suggest doing one series of tests with the ACT retard and the ECT retard tables set to 0. This will make sure that the truck is running off the borderline table on each pull. Same borderline table for each blower. This will help show that any difference you see is pecifically related to the efficiency of each blower, not inadvertant calibration changes caused by temperature modifiers.
I once saw an LS2 corvette air intake that advertise a 40rwhp improvement. Turns out the car was running different timing on each pull because the IAT and ECT retards were active. If you ran the car with the same spark, fuel, IAT and ECT, there was no difference betweenthe Stock inlet and the aftermarket one.
Just a suggestion...Afterall, if you tweak the cal between runs, is it really showing gains caused by just the hardware?
My gut feeling, the porting is helping but the larger clearance between the rotors (from the stripping) is hurting. Obviously to different degrees with each truck.
