Fixed all the hoses and ran a self test on the boost leash. It works fine so I might try it again tomorrow??

Why would the problem start all of the sudden now if it was an overfeed issue?

I'm betting on a turbo issue.

As the boost issue or the smoking?

I'm not sure if it's smoking or not? Left the dyno and when I started it something rolled out of the exhaust. We did some partial pulls but when the boost dropped off we pretty much quit. It might have been loaded up too?

Take the compressor housing off. If the wheel is scuffed (feel a bit on the blades) it's done.

Shaft play is hard to judge unless is like 60 thousands then you know it's toast. Check your thrust which is in and out. If it's more than 10 thou it's probably bad.

The other thing you'll notice with a turbo on its last leg is it'll start to get loud, meaning it'll sound bad ***. Turbo inlet whine gets crazy awesome sounding before it's toast.

Puffing smoke isn't that bad. Most turbos do even with a good drain off of a full pull decel. If it's smoking all the time it's usually a sign it's hurt.

What causes a turbo to fail? I bet there isn't 3000 miles on it.

Check your reference lines before you get nervous.

Oil supply volume, running below surge line, no blow off valve, high oil temps or dirty oil.

Not saying this is you, but turbos act like a fuse. They blow right before an engine goes. The have tight clearances and spin a crazy rpm. If there is anything in the oil they will chew up quick. I never get bb because of this. Nothing like a $10 spun rod bearing to toast a $2000 turbo lol.

Chinese turbos like to eat crap for no reason sometimes. On3, god speed, magnum, etc.... Most Chinese turbos use Garrett or bw rejected parts. They work but they don't meet specs.

The engine and turbo were new at the same time. Had no problems with either. What about breaking in a new engine with that turbo on there? There's got to be a certain amount of metal in the oil on break in. Would that be enough to damage it? The oil is always clean though. I'll check it out tomorrow though.

I had a turbo only last me about 4,000 miles this summer. Precision PT88 which was rebuilt by them prior to me buying it. The shop claimed to have an hour of use on their drag car with it after the rebuiild and I have no reason not to believe them. The thing was perfect when I got it, no play at all.

So later on (last month actually) I started noticing a nice stream of smoke coming out of my exhaust while idling at a light. Nothing while cruising, just when stopped. I started looking around online and read about some other people who had smokey exahust and decided to look into my turbo. It had some shaft play so I pulled a back silcone fitting off on the turbo discharge and saw it was white on the inside.... this turned out to be aluminum dust due to the compressor wheel rubbing on the inside of the cover because of shaft play.

Fast forward to last week, I swapped it out for a Borg Warner S480 and all the issues went away.

It's hard to say what cause the Precision to fail. I think my first blowoff valve was too small so i went to a 50mm. Then the spring was too stiff to open and I had lots of compressor surge for a full tank of gas. Also, earlier in the summer, I had a few forced hot shut downs when I lost a serpentine belt one time, alternator pulley another, and harmonic balancer after that. All separate, hard runs at different times.

So I say check out the inside of your cover, if you're not touching... run it.
