Looking at an Huron V3 kit for my 2006 Avalanche with a 5.3 and was looking for reviews on the kit. Noticed they had a group buy, so I figured someone on the forum has the kit installed. I'm just looking for a fun daily driver, don't do drag strip runs, however I do pull a 4k lbs. boat to the lake every once in a while. I have a 2015 Sierra with a 6.2L, and it would be awesome to match the horsepower of that thing, with some more down low torque.
My avalanche has the 3.42 gears, and am thinking of putting the 80e behind it instead of having a built 60e. What stall and upgrades would you recommend for this trans?

 

On the 06, Ditch the 3.42 and go 4.10 if your towing.

Stall depends on your set up and what your doing with it. Also depends the other parts you chose. With what you stated already, I am guessing a stock ish to 2600 stall. You will need a good cooler too!!

4.10 gears on a turbo truck. Seams way high. We always opted for 3.42 and 3.08. my truck flash the stall straight to 3000. Turbos seam to push that factory stall 500rpms higher. I have slipping anyways past that. Reason I need a stall.
You want you 06 5.3 to have the power of your 6.2 l86 engine? A turbo can do that plus 100hp or more.

 

It's true 4.10's seem counter intuitive because everyone pretty much agrees you gotta load the turbo to get into boost however I think you'll find at the strip the higher gears produce a better time. My 07 dropped .64 in the 1/8th 3.42-4.10, no changes same weather. 3k stall flashed to 2800. Changed to a 3k and fb to 4400 in about 5 seconds. That was the 7.64 run. Felt like it had a 7.4x that night but it literally jumped all over the track into the dirt. Sure needed limiting straps. Only run that night. 4.10's imho. Don't need ci at all with turbos!

 

What most people fail to realize on trucks Is, You first have to overcome a larger Tire size and more Weight compared to a car.

If you have 26-28 in tall tires in a 3000 Lb car and 3.42, that combo probably works well.

In a truck with the average tire being 30-32 inch tall and being closer to the 5K Lb mark. you need need to overcome that.

3:42 in a stock truck sucks enough. The RPM range is too low in the power band and they typically lug. 3:73 is better But if your in the 50-60 range and where towing You might experience some lugging. I typically have to pull it into third to get the RPM's up.

The 4:10's would get you in to the RPM range sooner and help you maintain that efficiency.

I have 3.42 in my twin turbo 4x4 truck and absolutely hate it down low.

 

On the torque converter, You want that thing to couple when your building boost. You also don't want to generate excessive heat when towing This is why I recommended around a 2500 stall. But it really comes down to the combo you put together.

There is much more to it than that and it's all about the combo. Depending on where the turbo comes in and starts spooling, It's not uncommon to blow through a converter.

I only occasionally tow, if i towed every day I would have just jumped into a 2500hd. However this is a DD, and I don't goto the strip. I just want a fun DD, that has some *****, and will get out of its way towing. 4k is the max I tow with it
