Default Dodge Ram 5.9 Factory Stall

My friend has an 02 Dodge with the 5.9 engine. He is getting terrible gas mileage, as low as 8.5mpg. When I rode with him last I noticed that his truck behaves like it has an unusually high (bigger than normal) stall converter. As far as we know it is stock. When he accelerates normal, it takes a long time for the the truck to shift into overdrive and every other gear keeps the rpms above 2000, shifts will only knock the rpms down by about 100 rpms. When he blips the throttle the rpms will shoot up and the tranny will downshift. I have ridden in several stalled cars and I think his truck acts the same. Does anybody know what the factory stall is on these trucks?

I may look at his tranny kick down cable and maybe loosen it and see if that works but I havent looked at his tb so I dont know if that is a possiblilty.

What do you guys think?

Cliff notes: Dodge ram with 5.9 getting really bad gas mileage and possibly has higher than normal stall converter. Wondering what the factory stall is on an 02 dodge.

I got about 14mpg with my old 5.9 around town. Not sure if the stall is the same between the hemi and 5.9 but the hemi is a 2300rpm stall stock. I would think the 5.9 should have a lower stall as it makes it's power much lower.

My old 01 Ram 1500 Quad cab with the 5.9 and 3.55 gears got about 8-10 MPG whether it was highway miles or city miles. It just didn't matter, so I'd say its pretty much normal.
