WTF is going on with these trannys
#1
i got 60,000 miles out of my stock tranny and that was with about 15,000 with the motor work and a little over 10,000 with a edge converter. in the last 4 months i have been through 4 transmisions. the first three were all stock with the stall and the last was built by one of the best tranny guys in the area. it was built with koleen steels and clutchs, that whole little transgo kit. it lasted two days and the clutchs are fried in that one two. is it posible to build a unit to last or do i need to burn this mf'r to the ground

damn what kinda numbers are you throwin through them? surely you have a trans cooler. i would say that the trans wasnt built right if you only went through 1 but 4?? could be heat, tune, converter, the builder, etc.

Check out this link. These guys are trying to figure out the tranny as well. It's just not doing well to push more then 400rwhp through it, though these guys are trying to do double.
The problem in short is when downshifting from 4th, it drops into the other 2nd gear (we have two second gears in these trannies and 2 overdrives) but uses one of the overdrive clutch plates which are very weak. They've tried adding additional plates to those overdrive gears but they are running out of room in the tranny.
They are saying if you want to race from a roll, turn over drive off, that will drop you to 3rd, which has stronger clutch plates. You can then drop into second gear from 3rd, because it will use the upshifting 2nd gear which is stronger.
What we really need is, just like the pcm, we need to crack the tranny computer and find a way to program it different so we don't use the weaker plates. It's been said they can reflash our tranny to turn it into a true 7 speed... but Chrysler won't give us the codes to do so.

Well Toe hit it on the head. To save your tranny NEVER hit WOT in overdrive or from highway speeds. Also, FLT does not make a transmission for our hemis but suncoast does. They make a bulletproof 518 that mates right up to the hemi which is warrantied and can handle more power then you will probably ever have. There are also a few guys working right now to make our transmissions stronger with some new experimental parts.

It's the 545 from what I remember in the other posts.
the suncoast conversion sounds interesting, I really wish I had some coin to play. One of those stroked 370 or 392's and a suncoast conversion tranny would be sweet.
Any idea what they are asking for it, how it works, and how they get around the tranny computer, 03's vs 04+?
