turbo on a stock hemi?
#1
whats going on guys? i have a 04 qc/rb 4x2 k&n fipk and magnaflow. just wanted to get some input. how would a stock hemi take an sts turbo? i know no one makes a tune for it yet. piggy back or stand alone are more of a option for tuning. i just want to know if yall think the stock motor will hold some boost.
(the other day i went to get a price on a superchips and the guy suggested a new bully dog programer. it is for gas burners as anyone seen one or had one on their truck if so are they worth it. i know the superchips works great and has more options.)

Ronnie at the Speedshop is putting a paxton kit on a SRT challenger this week, I would wait and see how that thing works. Get Nonnie to take a look at it for you. It is a really complete kit with a piggy back, injectors all of the brackets and such. I think it will make about 7 lbs when done.

The rings on the pistons sit high up creating a weak link. More then 6psi and you risk the piston coming apart. But under that and you should be ok. Turbo's also seem to be a bit better on the trannies over big N/A power or NoS hemi's as the power builds.

The stock engine will take 500-550 hp. This is when the pistons break up and usually the clutches in the tranny. I haven't heard of a single lower engine failure other than dampeners exploding from over-revving. At sea-level I would limit it to 7psi, at my altitude of 3500' I run around 8.5psi. It is important that you don't get too greedy with the AFR or the pistons with go for sure. I keep it fat with a 11.5 AFR and also use water/meth injection to keep my EGT below 1400*F.

I agree wtih FrostKing, I always recommend 7psi as a safe highpoint and 8psi if you're wanting to get a little on the risky side. I ran mine at 8.5 psi for 2 years w/o issues. After I installed a 6.1 cam and KRC heads on top of 9psi, I snapped a rod in half.
The smt6 with 8 large injectors and 2 bar map sensor is a really nice setup and gives you a safe tune. I also run meth. I stay on the rich side as well with about 11.2 a/f.

The trucks run a lower cr(9.6) than the SRT-8's so they can handle a little more boost. Some have run 10lbs safely but be prepared to build the engine if it blows. A safer bet would be 8psi as others have stated and that is with meth and/or i/c.
