Want to convert my 1990 GMC to standard tranny
#1
Whats up guys. I'm in the process of installing a new 383 stroker crate into my 1990 GMC Sierra SCSB Stepside. The answers I'd like help with pertain to swapping my 700r4 for a standard transmission. Everything I've read has been pushing me toward the t56, but I'm not really sure what all I will need to accomplish this. If i were to run the t56 in my truck, would I be able to use the stock style hydraulic clutch master/slave cylinders? I was also wondering if it would be easier to swap in an older 4 speed (like a t10). I've been told that the 5 speeds for this model truck aren't very reliable with any performance in front of them. Any insight on which transmission I should run, and what I would need to accomplish either would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

No, I was asking him; I assumed yours was going to be a performance build. I ask mostly because the NV4500 might be a better fit and an easier swap for him if he isn't going for a crazy performance build and would just enjoy changing his own gears.

True, only thing that would concern me is that he said he is doing a 383. The NV4500 from what I have been told does not hold much for performance. I have heard from 2 or 3 guys who tried it and either wished they did not put it in or ended up changing to the T-56. I believe the stock T-56 from the 1998 and up can hold around 450 ft lbs stock.

Got it. Yeah, I read that he was considering an old four-speed so I assumed maximum performance wasn't a priority. I think an NV4500 could do fine behind a Gen1 383, but obviously if he's got the coin he might as well go with the T-56 from the get-go.
