Default 17 mpg in 87 tbi 350?

Hey all I'm lookin at buyin an 87 c20 Scottsdale for 900 dollars in los Angeles. The woman who owns it is the original owner and said she gets 17 mpg highway on a trip to Utah. The truck has a tbi 350, turbo 400, longbed, campershell and full length running boards. That being said, does 17 seem realistic for a truck with that kinda of aerodynamics. Also, a buddy of mine was saying removing the camper shell would be retarded because the drag would decrease, but I think it increase because of the weight loss. Who is right?

Grammar fail: I meant my buddy said gas mileage would decrease because the campershell is gone.

That seems a little high with it being a 400 trans and stuff.

My 89 tbi 350 would get about 16.

Yeah but going what speed....... 45 mph? A 3/4 ton brick with a 400 auto...... yeah at normal even 60 mph speeds, good luck.

yeah thats what im thinkin... my 01 barely gets 18 according to the odometer... and thats a tuned 4x4. my speedo still reads 2 mph fast according to the speed indicators around here. my truck has 285/75r16s so its not that much bigger a tire then stock

haha i have no idea.... i asked her what mpg she usually got and her reply was:"i get 17 mpg on trips to utah to see familly". no mention of route (I15 through vegas or I80 through the sierras) or how fast she was going. it has dual tanks and she replaced both pumps recently. im going to look at it tomarrow, so we'll see. for a 900 dollar truck, in the shape its in (decent paint-by my standards) and the only dent from the pics i saw was a first sized dent by the driver side headlight, i'd say so far its not too bad if i buy it

thats EXACTLY what im buyin it for lol
puttin too many miles on my 01 (20,000 in the last year) down here in socal, and puttin the stepside on non-op and no insurance while keepin it parked in the barracks will save me some money. i want to keep the 01 and 88 long enough to pass onto my kids whenever they come so keeping them nice and having a cheap beater to buy makes sense to me.... correct me if you think im wrong haha
