hey guys. i am thinking of getting an 05 or 06 d-max crew cab 2500.
i dont know ANYTHING about the engines or the sierra trucks. i want to know as much as i can
i guess first would be are there alot of differences in the 05-06 and what are the benefits/downfalls of them.
also is it safe buying a diesel with 30k miles? are they very touchy about how they are maintained? driven?
anything else you guys can tell me
i dont know what the different motor codes are either and what they mean to me..
so i guess if anyone wants to help me out.. i appreciate it.

Yeah 30K is nothing to a diesel. The only difference I know off hand between a 05 and 06 is that the 05 have the LLY engines and the 06 you had a choice of either the LLY or the more powerful LBZ engine.
Not sure about the rest since my new truck will also be my first diesel.

LLY motor = 305hp/625tq
LBZ motor= 360hp/650tq
The Duramax is a pretty solid motor. Just keep regular 7500 mile oil changes with Delo or Rotella and a quality filter like Wix and that engine will last well into the 300k range without any major problems..
Drive em hard and they'll keep ticking.. Just be sure if you go with some aftermarket fueling boxes that you get some gauges to monitor EGTs- thats what will kill these engines..

Thank you guys.
Do you all think it is worth it looking for an 06 that i like to keep the LBZ motor or go with an o5 that will be cheaper and have the LLY motor and 5 speed? is the LBZ a better motor overall?

Both engines are very good.... just get the allison... it is bulletproof, and means you will have MANY MANY MANY worry free miles.
as for teh duramax.... like most diesels... they can be beaten on thrown down and just flat ran the
out of em, and theylle keep on goin.... just as long as you kep up on the regular maintenance...
and with a diesel, if you can save some cash go with the lly its really not that major of a difference unless you are towing like 5 or 6 fords and hemis at once

Only the 6 speed allison has the option for the manual shift on the shifter handle.
Also, these allisons aren't bullet proof by any means. Sure they are strong enough to handle the stock power but once you start adding in a programmer on its higher levels you risk the chance to limp the trans. There have been quite a few posts about people limping their trans when using the highest settings on the programmers. After that its all downhill for the trans.

The reason i said the allison is bulletproof is because he didnt mention going nuts... it sound like he just wants a dd... which at stock power levels even stage 1 mods the allison will last forever
