The 07.5 and newer dirty max's have a 4 inch exhaust system from the down pipe back to the tailpipe where it chokes down a little for the elephant dick cooler tip. The 01-07 classics all had 3.5 inch exhaust systems but I guess they thought with the slight power increase and the cat, exhaust filter and muffler they should increase the size to 4 inch to try and keep the flow up.

Bought a duramax muffler from a buddy (he has an 04-05 model) saturday. From what I can see, it's basically a three pass turbo muffler. 3.5" cores with no restriction, just perforation. Not sure about the center core of course. It's not all that heavy for being giant either. I'll let you know how it sounds on an otherwise stock 5.3 soon. $60 beats a $120 magnaflow any day

Got the muffler installed, the dump is by the spare, not visible. It's silent at idle and cruise, with a Denali like tone accelerating. Runs every bit as good as with the super 44, I'm happy.
