my dad is thinkin about getting a duramax more than likely it will be like an 07 or 08 with the LMM motor i think. i dont know too much about the duramax section and just need to know which motor the LBZ LB7 or LLY LMM to go with. like i said i know nothing about duramaxs i mess with gas motors like the 5.3, so any help will be appreciated. and also y or y not the motor is good or bad to go with. thanks michael matthews

I would go LBZ. The difference in the LMM and the LBZ are, New injectors with different nozzles for ULSD. Boreless style VG turbo for high RPM durability. Larger EGR cooler. Closed crankcase ventilation system. ECM controlled cooling fans. ECM controlled intake throttle upstream of turbo. Upgraded programming and of course that damn DPF or "Diesel Particle Filter".
You can get around DPF with EFILive or HPTuners.

They are ALL good engines capable of more HP and TQ than you can imagine. The LB7 was the first 2001 -2004 . Some of the earlier LB7's had some leaking injector problems, but GM offers a 200,000 mile warranty most of them. Next was the LLY 2004.5-2006 , great engine and this series had the new Variable vane turbo,( the LB7 has a standard turbo, non computer controlled). Then the LBZ from 2006-2007. This is the Factory HOT ROD DIESEL HERE! 360 HP and 650Ft lbs. These are the last of the old body style trucks and the last of the reguler emissions equipped trucks. The LMM 2007.5 to present is a great motor too ive read, but has the dreaded Diesel particulate filter on the exhaust and some new EGR controls, all of which can be defeated with tuning as said above. Take your pick, they all are great trucks, But ID GET AN 06 OR UP cuz you get the GREAT 6 SPEED ALLISON which seems to be a bit stonger than the 5 speed. My 2 cents

I love my LLY!. I have a suncoast IV, EFI live, s&b intake, PPE ported fuel valve, PPE race valve, FASS 150, and 4" exhaust. If you're going to keep it stock, the LBZ is the ticket. Once you start putting mods on, it's anyones game.

Early LBZ is a good choice. Traction control on the 1-2 shift is added in late 06, and reduces power a bit.
LMM's do not have complete tools yet, but has more potential than the others.
Me? I like LLY's.
