I looked into buying the MSD coils but didn't because after hearing several people using stocks and haveing nothing but success. It was explained to me this way. When it was one coil running all eight cylinders yes you may need a coil that can charge and discharge extremly fast and efficent but when you have one coil running one cylinder it has plenty of time to do its thing. So performance wise....keep the stockers.

if MSD coils added 5 HP everyone on this forum would probably have them...but notice that hummer boy is the only one with them.

and whats wrong with throttle body spacers? mine added 125 HP, and i think theres more power to squeeze out of that spacer

How was that set up? Where they used strictly as stock or with a voltage boost?
Just asking, not being contraversial. I know with the old systems boxes like MSD's and others where necessary due to not enough energy capacity and build up time as rpm's went up. It's easy to see the advantage of a coil per cylinder too. Are the MSD multispark boxes not needed either in high HP, boosted, or nitrous applications as well?
I know part of the need for multi spark was to keep plugs clean with lumpy cams, and big carbs running fat. Today EFI keeps the whole fuel curve much cleaner then the old days...which I still participate in!
parish made over a 1000 on stock rails and coils.. what coils did the 1000hp cars use before msd came out with these? STOCKERS!!! Go spend 650 on these coils and take it to the dyno. If it makes 2 more hp, Ill give ya 5 bucks. General Motors did their homework on their ignition.

Dam, beat me to it. I was just going to ask what coils Parish used.

Excellent info, thanks for clearing that up!

IIRC, the MSD 6A and 6AL work on small and big blocks because they generate multiple sparks per contact of the points, per cylinder, ONLY above 3ooo rpms. Below that, they are of no benefit. The 6AL also had the added bonus of a rev limiter, which, older cars don't have in their non-existent PCM. I am sure that the MSD LS coils do the same thing, hence the price tag, but I don't know whether or not the stockers do that already. If there was more spark generated by the MSD coils, there would be a better burn, which would result the ability to run more timing. Not a single tuner on this board, to my knowledge, says that if you run these coils, he can get another 2* of itming in the upper rpms, which leads me to believe that the stockers do a more than adequate job of burning fuel.

IMO, the better 'waste' of $600 is figuring out which type of plugs get the most efficient burn, gas mileage, and power. That would be a pretty good investment.

BTW, apparently I have a small dick, my coils are black and shitty looking...but then again, I have engine covers, so no one will ever know.

stockers on everything we have done. somewhere above 800rwhp they need a little dwell added and you can do that with hp tuners or efilive in about 2 minutes.

i have seen at least 5 threads where people had problems with the msd's and switched back to stock and the problem went away.
