I am looking for thoughts and opinions on springfield xdm full size guns vs smith and wesson M&P full size guns in 9mm. I have a XDM 5.25 in .40, but wanted a cheaper range gun. The M&P has the best feel in my hand, but I have never shot one. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome.

Why not just stick with your .40?

 

My back of the napkin math says stay with the .40 unless you shoot a ton. At Academy, Winchester 9mm FMJ ammo is $13/50 box, and same for .40 is $17/50, so $4 savings. If you shoot 1,000 rounds you save $80. So to break even on a $600 pistol, you would need to shoot 7,500 rounds.

I have an XDM .40 3.8 with a Powder River Ultimate Match Trigger and love it, but I haven't shot an M&P so can't compare.

 

I'm a M&P fan. I have had several glocks, XDs, and M&Ps. The only thing left in my safe is my M&Ps.

But in all honesty you need to go shoot all of them. I have said it before pistols are like knives. they are an extension of your hand and you must be 100% comfortable to be confident with what you are shooting. I reload so out of the box accuracy is a moot point for me with factory ammo.

Glocks have a huge aftermarket, but even after all the "mods" I was still unhappy with them. The XDs have a growing market but never done any of the mods. The M&Ps dont really have much of an aftermarket yet. I have stoned all the triggers on mine and they shoot very well and I really like the triggers now. If you are ever up my way or are planning to shoot on a weekend let me know and you can throw a few down range with the fullsize I have.

 

It cost me within $5 per 1000rds on 9mm vs 40 to reload.
Think its $68 per 1000 for 9mm. And 73 for 40s.

Ive got the springer precision trigger kit in my service model xd and its nice.
But i polished everythin in my subcompact and its perfect for being a carry gun.

For me, id vote XDM, but like mentioned one might fit you better and you will excel with it over the others.

 

I should have clarified I only shoot .40 and I only reload JHP rounds. I dont shoot much FMJ stuff. So reloading the JHP is considerably less than quality factory JHP rounds.

I reload cast lead 155gr SWC's in my 40.. $32 per 1000

 

I own both, an XDM .45 and an M&P .40. I like them both and agree, the M&P grips better naturally and the backstraps actually have more affect on the shooting of the weapon.

As for a range gun, whatever you carry should have the same controls. If you carry your XDM, get a Springfield XD or XDM so you don't have to think about anything and use your instincts instead....

 

I don't reload, but should as much as I shoot. I will go thru 500 rds in about 3 months. All I do is go to the range and shoot. I have a model 66 .357 for home defense ect. I don't carry, I just love to shoot. I replaced my hot rod bug with a love of shooting sports, and guns bug. The "feel" of a s&w m&p in my hand is a lot nicer to me than my XDM. Plus the best thing imo is the smith is made in the usa. I have a trade lined up, so I may do some swapping depending on the details. After a few thousand rounds, the savings over .40 will add up.

 

My new XDM is a box stock 3.8 compact .40 and although I only picked it up a little over 24 hours ago and put 50rds thru it, I shot a similar M&P and wasn't really all that turned on... I say between the two, go with the XDM....
