.40 imo, esp if your thinking home defense. The 9mm is good for the range and all, but the cost of the .40 is really not much more.

its not so much about the cost of the gun. although the 9mm bullets are a lil cheaper. although ive been told the 9mm are prone to rainbowing after 30 feet

Go 40mm. What brands are you looking at? I own a kimber custom tle 45 and my grandpa owns a kimber 40. I ve fired both and I love both. Kimber are a bit overpriced though.

Whatcha looking for purpose? I've got a .40 FNP and love it. Its a bit on the large side to carry though. I still want to get a 9MM as I personally feel I'm much more accurate with a 9mm. Best bet would be to go to a range that rents firearms and try several of the weapons that you might be interested in.

My next one will be an H&K USP 9mm.

personally i'd recommend a 9mm because they're great to practice with at the range and get comfortable with and loaded with the right ammo they're pretty effective at stopping people. in my opinion the .40 S&W is a perfectly fine round that is effective, cool and yet has no real reason to exist when you can get a 9mm that holds more ammo in the same frame size, is cheaper to practice with and will defend you and yours just as well or you can get a .45 and load it with gentle ammo if you want to make a bigger hole without the extra kick...but in the end, go with what feels best to you, assuming you have an adequate caliber choice, confidence and comfort with your piece are the next most important things...

A 9mm in a QUALITY JHP will be sufficient for defense, and will be cheaper at the range.

If you believe the caliber war hype, buy the .40 S&W and get a conversion barrel, which is what I did.
