Does anybody on here shoot 338 RUM? I'm looking for a new LR rig as my 300 weatherby just doesn't cut the mustard these days.

 

A 300 weatherby will do anything a 338RUM will...

With that said I dont like my 338RUM as much as I do my 300WSM or my 30-378 both are better shooting guns IMO. Of course this is all with shelf loads, one day Ill have time to mess with hand loads.

 

my buddy just got thru with a 338 Edge and its nice.. longest deer kill is at 1425yds so far.

 

Well its not going to be for hunting. I won't take shots over 500 yards when it comes to hunting. This would be more for LR target shooting. If I were just going to stay at 1000 yards then the 300 weatherby or my 7mm mag would be just fine. However I'm looking to push the envelope further. The only reason I wouldn't use the 300 Edge is simply because it's a wildcat at the moment. And the only reason I'm leaning towards a 338 is the higher BC and less wind drift. To my experience it is more forgiving on operator error at extended ranges.

 

ive taken my 300wm out to 1400 so far, it does good. This summer i want to get it out to atleast 1800yds. ill see how much scope i have left.

Why not a 338 LM? I know they will get on out there.

 

No lie that is a fine piece of engineering. However, Simply put, the cost of the rifles chambered in LM is just too much for my budget.

 

Ever tried a 300wm? Its pretty cheap to shoot and ballistic calculator shows my loads stay supersonic out to 1900yds. how far you planning on sending them? barrel should last a lil longer than that weathersby haha

Just saw you have a 7mag. 180gr Bergers have a BC of .659, get it up around 2900-3000fps if it shoots good and it should stay Super out to 1800-1900.

 

Thats one hell of a hot load with the 180gr. However at 3000fps my records show that it goes trans sonic at 1600 yards. No my only reasoning with the 338 is the more readily available high BC bullets. I.E. .900+. I want to take it past 2200 yards eventually. Hell, if I had the money, I'd get the 375 Cheytac. Though if I had that kind of money I wouldn't have a 4.8 in my truck.

my 210gr loads in my 300wm are 2900.. i figured a 7mag should be able to push a 180 to atleast 2900.. but i never loaded for a 7mag so i was just guessing

Yea a 300gr Berger would be nice.. .891bc.
I thought JLK use to make a 300gr .338 but i didnt see it.

 

Well I was thinking more along the lines of a solid copper design like a bore rider or something similar.
