Default Violently Slamming into Gear

I recently got a 2000 Chevy 1500 with a cammed 5.3. Unsure of the trans or if it has a stall converter matched for the cam. I got in it the other day and shifted into drive and it slammed into gear and made a banging noise in the rear differential. It drives smooth, shifts smoothly until I turn at a light where its idle is low. I can hear the rear differential make that banging sound. I’ve taken the bed off to diagnose it and the banging is definitely coming from the diff. But why? Why is it so hard? Thanks in advance!

When you go from Park to Drive is when it bangs?

Otherwise shifts fine between the gears once it's put on Drive? 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 shifts okay?

Pop the differential cover and see if there's anything out of the ordinary...

Yes besides the initial shift from park to drive or reverse it shifts very well! Smooth and consistent! I will do that and post an update. I have a video of the banging but it’s too large so I’ll post it when I get it shrunk down!

You can upload it to Youtube, then post the link here.

It does sound like it's the rear end...and not the transmission.

Look at your RPO code to see if you have the G80.

I found a code that says GU6 in my glove box. Not sure if its the G80 rear or not but to my understanding its the gear ratio "GU6"

that’s a G80 with 3.42 gear

HoLee Molee! That does seem violent.

I'm gonna say rear end, possibly excessive backlash. If you could get yourself a HF dial indicator with a magnetic base and measure the ring gear backlash, i bet that's where your problem lies.

Check to see if the pinion nut has backed off.

Other than that, with the drive shaft turning ¼ turn like that, it's time for a rear rebuild. That's beyond any need to measure anything. Something inside there is severely fornicated. Probably nothing wrong with the transmission.

I'm going to remove the driveshaft and check for play. While it's on I can't feel any play at all. I'm also going to remove the cover and see wtf has blown up in there! If I do need a rear end rebuild what do yall think about gears? Stay with the 3.42 or go 4.11? Many thanks guys and I'm putting my overalls on and getting to it. I'll post an update shortly!
