Default tuning training

I've been working as a mechanic for the past 8 years and am always looking for new ways to expand my skills. I live in a small town and there are very few option for tuning in the local area. I've decided that i would like build up some tuning skills so i can offer that to my customers. I have no expierence with tuning but i do have knowledge of how engine management works. I am looking for some advice on how to get the ball rolling. I was planning on getting HP Tuners and just start playing around with my truck but would also like some kind of training. I live in British Columbia, Canada and i haven't really seen any kind of training around my area. Does anyone know of some good courses around my area, or even some good books/videos to give me a good kickstart? i dont mind doing a bit of travel and investing some money, but i also dont want to be loaded with a bunch of information that i wont be able to use right away (if that makes any sense). Any input or advice would be much appreciated.

Reading lots of it! Read all the stickys on hptuners.com/forum that should be enough to get you started, the Greg Banish first video will help out too. Lots of info out there just gotta find it and READ!

The Banish DVD's and books is a good place to start. And like said above, HPT site is a great place to get started. You just have to sift through the bullshit.

You can read until the end of time, but unless you have photographic memory it's just jargon and you won't retain much, if any of it.

However if you couple that knowledge while playing with something like..... ohh your 99. You will figure it out. Tuning really isn't that difficult if you understand how the engine and all of its inputs/outputs to the PCM work.

I think the training or what have you would be most effective once you are looking at what you are working with. If you don't have software buy whichever one you want.... or even just download the free trial ( efi does that anyhow, I never checked hp) and go through all the parameters while using your reference of choice.

I just dove in and googled what I questioned...... But I have an industrial plc background so it's not that different either.
