Not if he ran a DBC OS that was meant for that PCM

You don't have to buy any plugs, the plugs are the same, only the red covers are replaced with green ones and there are a couples of wires to switch. The Newer PCM has a faster processor in it and has a DBC OS available, of course the OP isn't doing it for any of those reasons.

Not with out some work, but possibly...

Does your buddy have a "year" licenses of 03's or something, cuz if he doesn't and his truck is an 03, then you have to buy a license to tune your new PCM anyway. If he just has it you tune his 03, he can't just tune yours to cus you got a 03 PCM. What is the whole story behind your reasoning for wanting to go to a 03 pcm?

That's what I would do. You can use your stock 00 PCM and it's only a $100 to buy a singe VCM license from HPT (2 credits), as apposed to having to buy an 03 PCM (about $75) and I'm about 95% sure you will have a fair about of repining to do with the pig tail and then also you will have to find a base tune file that will work with you truck. Seem like a a lot of work, just to avoid buying a 100 license...

He has to buy a PCM anyway, so that part is a moot point and if he needs a drive by cable base file for a 2004 PCM for an A4, I'd send him one. I could send you the pin outs, look at, but there isn't that many wires to change, you'd spend more time removing the extra ones, for the rear O2's, Evap, and EGR, then you would repinning, the few that need changing. The newer PCM's are fast, that in its self, would be enough reason for me to use, and spend the few extra dollars. He'd need to get a license for the PCM either way, since his buddy's will not cover it. Plus if he wanted, I get him the PCM and send it with the changes, since I already have the license to cover a drive by cable 2004 PCM, and he can decide later what he want to do about, having his buddy tune it. Of course depending on what he has for a harness might also help him decide what to do

Why does he need a new PCM?? He's putting a 01 5.3 in his 00 4.8 truck, same PCM will work just fine. It's a plug and play swap done 100's of times on here. I have a 01 truck that came with a 4.8 that now has a 98 5.7 ls1. I'm still using the 01 PCM that my truck came with.

The 03+ have the same processor, they are are not faster, just have more memory (512 vs 1 meg) I don't know why some people are dead set to do things the HARD way!

LMFAO, Dont forget that by going to a "faster" pcm you are loosing the ability to adjust about 20 adaptive tables in the trans section. That in its self, would be enough reason for me to use the 01-02 PCM!
