The only time you put 317's on a 5.3 is when both items are damaged and your turning in a core motor...

Yank the 6.0L and swap any 5.3L in it. then push it down the road.

You don't have a pick and pull or pick your part type wrecking yard in your area?

none with an LQ9 that i saw recently... but there are a handful of cheap escalades for sale within a couple hours.
thought being that with a running truck, i could at least verify the engine was good prior to buying vs gambling on a junkyard motor... and if buying the truck super-cheap, it wouldn't be a big deal to resell it for the same super-cheap = a free-ish engine swap.

but since that clearly wouldn't be the case, sound like i'm just better off buying a motor outright.

You could still come out ahead if the price was right picking up the Escalade. Strip what's good ecm, harness, e-fans, etc. and resell what's left to the salvage yard. Buying a LQ9 salvage like I did ($1,100) it didn't have any accessories, starter, alternator, alternator bracket, e-fans etc. which added up.

yeah... but we're moving in about two months. that don't leave much time to part stuff out when my wife & i already have 3 vehicles but only 1 trailer.
and since i've already got the 5.3, i only need the short block (and maybe an oil pan, since my drain plug threads are stripped).

hmm... Copart has an 06 Sierra 1500 4x4 crew cab a couple hours away that has 152k, VIN code N with MAX engine covers & door badges, and what looks to mostly be rear end damage. listed as run/drive & no bids (granted not sure it's biddable yet, though). how's that whole process work & might it be worth it? could i sell the truck back through them afterwards?

HOLY CRAP!!

all these years, i thought every 02-06 Escalade had an LQ9, but after thinking i'd found like three VIN typos in a row, i dug a little deeper...

turns out the 2wd normal tahoe-size ones had the LM7 as standard from 02 to 05. whoda thunk?!
well, maybe this plan ain't so far-fetched after all... i'd just have to be more careful about which one i bought, and the person buying it from me would still get an AWD 5.3 - which is better than a 2WD 5.3 (until you consider the low compression - which could be marketed as "ready for big turbo but too many irons in the fire", which ain't untrue... it'd just need a LOT of boost ALL the time to not feel worse than a regular tahoe).

i need to go to bed.
