HPTuner issue
#1
Have a few things wrong with the tune on a truck I just picked up. I bought HPTuners so I could hopefully learn a bit.
Well first thing I plug it in and it wants 6 credits to program my truck! All other options are greyed out. From what I have read its because the previous tuner left the serial corrupt? (yyyyyyyyyy)
Looks like my options are...
Use the 6 credits. No issue but damn expensive and if something goes wrong and i need a different PCM I'm hosed.
Have the dealer reflash. So I start back at zero, pay them $120 and won't be able to drive the truck till I get my current flash back on there.
Pick up a different PCM and license it. Set my original back for a rainy day.
Am I missing an option? The truck is a DD so looking for the least amount of downtime possible. Its a "411" PCM so any "411" PCM should work correct?
Thanks for any advice!

I actually emailed hptuners and got the "that's the way it is reply". If I would have known this was going to be an issue I would have bought efi instead. Their license doesn't tie to the serial so doesn't have this problem. There wasn't a way to know this until I plugged it the interface and of course there is a nice sticker on the box that says once cut no returns. It wouldn't be a huge deal but the extra 4 credits cost $200.00. I am quickly approaching the range that I could have had someone tune it.
I guess I will go buy a computer.

Bought it new.
The different unmodded computer would have a valid serial so I could license that PCM for 2 credits. Its not HPTuners fault. They do that to keep people from churning out tunes over and over again without paying. But for a guy just learning credits are too expensive to just **** away.
Hope that makes sense... Like I said I'm just getting started.

You can pick up a 411 PCM on ebay for pretty cheap. I've gotten a number of them off of there in the $30-$50 range for "cores" for my mail order tune customers.
Yeah if you don't have unlimited licenses that's always a real kick in the ***** for someone coming across a corrupt serial number like that! Sorry to see that happen to you man.

Ordered one last night. Cheaper than I thought it would be. Hopefully the tune swap won't be too hard but at least if I screw up I can always put the original back in. Now I hope I can find the problem. What good is a swapped truck if you can't spin the tires? Haha

What exactly do you have going on with it as far as I guess what I am asking is what is the problem?

The idle doesn't drop off after throttling it. It does but very slowly. From a stop when you put your foot in it it seems doggy and won't spin the tires. I did a short log the other night and when I went wot timing dropped from 30° to 12° until I got rolling a bit. I assumed it was torque management of some sort but it all seems turned off. I did read something about a preemptive timing pull to avoid knock? But not sure where that is.
The only other thing I don't like is part throttle 2nd gear shifts are brutal. I would like to soften them a bit as well.
Again I am brand new at this. But eventually I would like to bump things up a bit since the previous guy said it was a conservative tune and was tuned on low octane fuel.
Would be glad to hear anyone's thoughts.
Thanks!
