How to run a larger DBW Throttlebody without an x-link
#21
Yeah I figured out that this was common before the x-link. I think back in the day it was easier because hall effect throttle-bodies didn't exist and brand new ls2 throttle-bodies were just on the shelf ready to go. But nowadays I am starting to think its the way to go.

Hello, thank you for the write up. Got my gold blade working with this procedure but it makes a high pitch whirring noise when key on and then whenever you press the pedal it starts again and continues 10-12 seconds after the pedal is released. Do you have any thoughts on what could cause this?
tried 2 throttle bodies and both new & had same results. They are GM parts and not knock offs

Totally normal. These TAC modules don't have the quiet motor driver.

I can confirm that this does in fact work. Adapter harness need the wires swapped as mentioned. My Tac Module was the number listed from an 01-02 8.1L Express. The pedal was from the same application. The PCM is a DBC P59 loaded with a 2618 OS tune. Engine and Engine diagnostic segments swapped from a 2005 Silverado 3500 6.0L using a 2005 van 4L80E and system segment with the DBW option enabled. Analog a/c stuff specific to the van setup in my application was the easiest way to make that work. The throttle body was a GM 87mm that actually came on an Indmar MCX 350. Came with my SBC intake manifold. Same TB as an early GenIV truck. All the harness bits came from a 2002 Express 8.1L and the harness side was pinned to the 8.1L schematic that was used with the 0411. This would be close to plug and play on a 2000-02 DBW truck including an 8.1L in any of the applications it came in. Great for an 87mm upgrade to replace the hard to find OE TB on the 8.1Ls. Get an 4-3 bolt adapter plate, the LS1 Corvette conversion harness, swap the pins, and bolt it on.

I just ordered the TAC module for my truck. I will be cutting up my x-link to use those connectors to make the adapter. I found this thread at the perfect time because the x-link in my truck was causing issues and throwing codes occasionally, etc. I was to the point I was considering putting the stock intake/throttle body back on the truck just to get my reliability/drivability back.
I will post here if I have any questions, but mainly wanted to make this post to thank @frosty95 . Great write-up and support in this thread!

Because I have an TBSS intake on my truck
Edit: I think I misread your post at first and though you said 78mm throttle body, which would be the original one my truck had on it, but when I swapped the 6.0 into the truck I also put on the TBSS intake and LS3 throttle body as well as the x-link. Not sure if I am missing something, but I cannot run anything other than the stock 78mm throttle body on my truck without an x-link or the modification in this thread?

yup, and GM made an early 87mm Throttle body with 8 pins. It's not super common but it is out there.
Just like the factory 1 year only truck style intake with a 90mm 4 bolt opening that was used on the 05 trailblazers with the 5.3L.

I did not know that an 87mm TB could be bought that would work with no modifications on my truck. Neat. Not sure how I missed that info back when I was doing the swap lol.

Not many know about the 8 pin throttle body.
