Help with Hypertech Programmer
I have a 2000 GMC Sierra 5.3l truck and i just bought a hypertech programmer for it. I was wondering if anyone knew what the best way was to set the gears so i can get the most out of it. Also, my truck is very slow off the line so i was wondering if changing the first gear would help that at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hypertech isn't going to give you anything. I don't think it even changes the spark tables. Pretty much all you can do with it is shove your RPM limiter to 6000 and set the shift points at +6. It's not the greatest way, but that's how you'll see the most out of the elcrapola handheld.
Also, don't mess with the gear ratio screen. You will mess up your speedo and you will probably get a ticket.

I made this mistake on older trucks of also buying a handheld tuner. Sorry you spent the money on one but I would sell it ASAP and get a custom tune done locally or get one done from one of the vendors on here.

Thanks fellas for your input. I actually bought it off of craigslist for 70 bucks so i'm glad i didn't spend the 350 on it. I actually meant to ask about the shift points not the gears. My mistake. How do you set the gears so you get the most out of it.

Think you meant shift points?? I haven't used hypertech but have used the Diablo and Jet tuners in the past and there should be an option to increase shift firmness and also an option to increase how many 100's of RPM's over factory shift points you want it to shift for each shift (1-2, 2-3 etc)

I would talk to a professional or a performance shop if you can find one. When I had my hand held tuner I managed to blow up a couple trannys. Lucky I had a shop that still honored my warranty.
A performance shop or I am sure someone here could give you more advice as to how far you can push the stock transmission more than I can. I would imagine just doing some small increment increases and seeing how it reacts would be safe, just don't go maxing everything out hoping for the best results.
